Via The Huffington Post: CNN announced yesterday evening that veteran investigative reporter Carl Bernstein will join the network's political team for the 2008 presidential campaign. No word on whether Mr. Bernstein, who recently published the book A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Clinton, will appear with Watergate partner Bob Woodward, another sometime CNN contributor.

Interestingly, in CNN's press release, Mr. Bernstein praises the network for demonstrating "time and again a sincere effort to go beyond the horserace." That seems to be an attribute CNN is stressing lately -- whether or not it's actually, you know, true, is another matter.

Mr. Bernstein:
I read your book entitled Woman in Charge and thoroughly loved it. It is very well-written and just like all the many books that I have read on the Clintons, it shows her with all her warts and human frailties. Still, Hillary comes across as a very remarkable woman who deserves to be be given the chance to serve as president. At a gathering of family and friends made up of seventeen highly educated and successful professionals we made an informal poll of our personal choice of presidential material in the American elections. Out of the 17 people, 16 strongly favored Hillary Clinton and one was for Mc Cain because of his unquestioanble patriotism. Canadians cannot vote in your elections but we all expressed our faith and confidence in Hillary Clinton as the person to best serve America and her allies in the world in this particular time in history. The Clintons are well- respected here despite all the old stories and scandals. All politicians, Obama including, lie and have their own type of scandals but it seems that media prefers to zero in on the Clintons. None of your three candidates is perfect. Warts and all, we still believe
that Hillary Clinton will best serve the world as president in your country. As the author of Hillary Clinton's book, we wish that you would speak a little bit more favorably of her in your comments on CNN. We find it disappointing that American media seems to be bent on destroying her chances at every turn whereas every possible edge is given to Obama. Many countries, including Canada, have had women leaders already. Here you have a remarkable woman ready and prepared to lead and she is given such a raw deal. This unfairness is a disservice to both America and your allies. The world is watching how democracy plays in your elections. Although we cannot vote in your elections, Canada is your ally in the world. Your wars also become our wars. America's well-being and prosperity and lack of it also affects your allies in so many different ways. We wish America the best but in this elections, what your Canadian viewers are seeing so far is very disappointing. Media needs to be more impartial in their news reporting. On your part, Mr. Bernstein, I would expect that you would be kinder about your comments regarding Hillary Clinton. After all, your book on Hillary was a great success and if she wins, you would benefit from having written the biography of the winner.
