It's Curtains for Little Italy's Little Charlie's; Bowie-Backed Burlesque Show Replacing It!

It's official. Sting, David Bowie and club owner Ivan Kane have finally gone to contract to bring Kane's burlesque show Forty Deuce to New York. Late yesterday, the trio signed on with New York Commercial Realty's James Famularo to open Kane's Las Vegas-based show at 19 Kenmare Street in the space that currently houses Little Charlie's Clam House. The contract is for approximately 5,500 square feet on the basement and first floor.
"Sting and David Bowie are direct partners," Mr. Famularo told The Observer. "They are going to be involved in the creative process."
Forty Deuce is a burlesque show that Kane started in Las Vegas in 2002. He has since opened a branch in Los Angeles, and has been in talks to bring the show to New York for some time.
As The Observer reported last week, David Zahabian purchased the 14,000-square-foot, six-story building at 19 Kenmare on April 30 for approximately $10 million. There were questions as to whether Little Charlie's, a neighborhood institution, would survive the acquisition.
"This will take the place of Little Charlie's," Mr. Famularo said. "It will be Kane's performance space with tiered seating and a stage for the girls."
Forty Deuce hopes to open its doors by fall of 2007.

I'd take Little Charlie's over some burlesque show any day. I'm one of many many New Yorkers who are very sad to see Charlie's go. They were one of the only Italian eateries that hit the nail on the head with their down home cooking. Not only were they a piece of NY City history, their food had substance, their place had a sense of family & both left customers much more satisfied than a burlesque show ever could.
Just heard that Little Charlies had been bought out and shut down after 81 years of serving wonderful, authentic and reasonably priced Italian food. They had the best sauce, shrimp and calamari in the city. It's a shame that mega dollar gentrification is ruining small family businesses such as Little Charlies. Hears hoping that they can reopen at another location in the city, so that its many fans can once again experience this classic slice of New York. In the meantime does anyone know of a similar & comparable restaurant in NYC with such wonderful Italian food. Please post any recommendations. Shame on the redevelopers!
I have been enjoying Little Charlies for over 25 years along with many family and friends, of all the real estate in New York City, they had to put this jewel of a restaurant out of business and bring this Burlesque show that will surely be a flop and not even remembered in six months, let Sting and Bowie take this clown act to London and close down one of thier eateries, Shame on them
What sad, sad news. My husband's family has been going to Little Charlie's since at least the 50's. He and I went there on one of our first dates over 25 years ago and have taken our children many times since. Little Charlie's is an institution - a treasure from old NY. What a waste to have it replaced by a bit of smut. As if there isn't enough of THAT in the world already. Surely Sting and Bowie have better things to do than destroy the type of family businesses that are at the very heart of New York. What's next, DeRobertis? I hope Little Charlies reopens. The food will be wonderful regardless of the location.

Oh my goodness! Were we the last people in NY to hear about this. My husband and I went to Piemonte's last night to pick up Pumpkin Ravioli for a party and we were smacking our lips for Little Charlies---we walked there and could not believe our eyes---this is so depressing!! We have had so many wonderful meals at Little Charlies over the years.
There is really no other place like it--where else can you mop up that spicy wonderful sauce with some great bread and those delicious fried shrimp---and all the good food and good times! Please re-open somewhere else!!

I started going to Little Charlie's when I was a kid, because my father had been going for years. I've never ordered anything on the menu except baked clams and the shrimp and calamari combo w/medium sauce. I always got a side of hot too just to soak my brwad in it. It's a shame that this place isn;t around any longer, and I hope they open somewhere else soon.
