Russert Fails Constitutional Law
Speaking of Ron Paul ... blogger Ben Fritz catches NBC's Tim Russert making an embarrassing error during his interview with the Republican presidential candidate on last Sunday's Meet The Press.
At one point, Mr. Russert asked his guest: "You say you're a strict constructionist of the Constitution, and yet you want to amend the Constitution to say that children born here should not automatically be U.S. citizens."
But of course, as Ben points out, this is only a contradiction if you don't understand the meaning of the term "strict constructionist". (Short version: it's a theory of judicial interpretation that has nothing to do with constitutional amendments. For instance, President Bush has said he favors strict constructionist judges, but also supported a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.)
Mr. Paul's response: "What's the contradiction there?" We were wondering the same thing.
Russert did not fail anything. He understands very well Constitutional principles and theory. His sole purpose was to create doubt in the less-informed viewer about Ron Paul. In fact, Russert was clearly much more hostile to Ron Paul than the other candidates that have appeared on his show. Contrast this interview with Russert's interview with Huckabee and you will see a completely changed Russert. Huckabee was never interupted, was thrown "soft ball" questions, etc. Russert serves his corporate masters well.
I agree with Brad's comments above. I saw this interview in it's entirety when it was broadcast. Much more time should have been spent discussing our current and future problems (and we have some major ones coming down the road). Instead it seemed Mr. Russert and the producers were nitpicking at issues that might make Ron Paul look bad. At this juncture in the primaries, they start this week, should we really be talking about Abraham Lincoln?
You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar. Russert on the other hand, is a scoundrel, through and through. I watch MTP quite a bit, and was very saddened to see the utter scorn he had for Paul. This man is a Dr, and a 10 term Republican. McCain called him the "most honest man in Washington". To spit in his face on TV, and then make out with Huckabee the next weekend, made me lose the tiny bit of respect I had left for Russert. I agree with both of the previous comments.
Does anyone seriously doubt that Ron Paul would have rather discussed monetary policy than some nuanced opinions on a war that happened 150 years ago? Did Russet really think Ron Paul was going to be able to satisfactorily explain his civil war views in 5 minutes? No, and that's exactly why Russet brought it up. Funny...Ron Paul does not even remember making such a statement and Tim Russet failed to mention the source.
Were I a Ron Paul supporter,(I am) Every place this troglodyte goes to for the rest of his life, I would walk up and ask him for the source of that statement!
All Paul supporters, If you see Tim Russert, ask him for the source.

I too watched both Huckabee and Paul debates. Russert was FAR more hostile and accusatory toward Paul than he was toward "The Huckster." Huck got to simply speak slowly (according to his IQ) and lay out his ideas, while Paul had to spend his time defending his EXCELLENT and IMPECCABLE voting record, voting FOR citizens and FOR the constitution against unwarranted attacks. Of course, once you watch "freedom to fascism" you'll know why Ron Paul has to be smeared. Take 2 hours of your life to watch F2F video...for the next 20 years you will be thankful you did...
Yeah, you know the powers that be are scared when they are trying to discredit Ron Paul by arguing esoterica about Abe Lincoln, and what Ron Paul thinks about Lincoln.
This is the same Tim Russert who has one of the most powerful seats in "journalism", and yet he aided and abetted the neocons when they sold the invasion of Iraq. Yeah, chubby Russ was busy waxing about his daddy and growing up in working class Buffalo. Yeah, whatever... this guy is no journalist, he's just a minor celebrity who wants to getter bigger and bigger paydays so he can keep chowing down on foie gras. When's the last time you heard of a journalist writing a vanity book and mash piece to himself, then using the media empire of General Electric/NBC to promote it? Talk about chutzpah! Russert's appetites obviously consume him, as does his self-worship.
You got to hand to to Ron Paul though. He takes the questions and gives honest, direct responses. Ron Paul doesn't mince words or flip-flop. What other candidate for President could discuss topics as wide ranging as the abolition of slavery in countries outside of the US, the gold standard, the Federal budget and how much of that budget is paid for from Income tax as opposed to other taxes and excise fees, and a strict constructionist position on the US Constitution?
I agree with all of the statements above. In addition to Tim Russert's disrespectful treatment of Dr. Paul - ABC and FoxNews recent decision to not include him in their upcoming debates / forums on the 6th and 10th(?) are the last two straws that broke the camels back for me and my wife.
What this means is that my wife and I are going to cancel our subscription to cable television so that we no longer support Main Stream Media. In addition to boycotting the MSM, we have decided to boycott as many of their sponsors (as possible) as well.
We have decided that this is the most logical course of action for us to take since we get the majority of our news from the internet anyways. Plus, as a 10 year Veteran I will have the added peace of mind that I am no longer financially contributing to the MSM's blatant and underhanded manipulation of the democratic process of this nation. Another added benefit will be that we have more of our disposable income to invest in something more worthwhile like our son's college fund.
I agree with you guys. This was not so much an "interview " as a railroading, looking for some discreet little tidbit to discredit the man. It seems that a person would have some kind of respect for their own education and hard work if not for the same in another human being, and it seems that this would dictate fair and honest reporting. This is precisely why we need less government, and fascists controlling the media.

No other candidate has as many meet-up groups. No other candidate has as many sign-waving's and rallies. No other candidate has as many boots on the ground going door-to-door on their behalf. No other candidate has as many fans going out of their way to show their support by staking out strategic locations to hold up a sign or banner at a sporting event, a live news feed, or even a competitor's engagement.
However, the greatest feat in this amazing performance may not be what has been witnessed by the masses, but what has been hidden from them. For this phenomenal candidate has attained this profound notoriety while being virtually censored by every major establishment, including his own party.
Ron Paul is certainly the most magical presidential candidate in the race. Yet, he owes his accomplishments to genuine transparency, not sleight of hand. If he fails to produce a top tier finish right before your very eyes, it will only demonstrate that the prodigious conjuring of the American media has trumped him with a spellbinding illusion that he was simply no match for.
Russert is a partisan hack. Why Dr Paul even wasted his time with him is beyond me.
