Sabini's Future
I was talking to a knowing Democrat about John Sabini’s recent run in with the law, who pointed out that although it’s never good to get busted for DUI, there's no obvious existential threat to Sabini's electoral career. Sabini had a couple of close elections, in 2006 and 2004, but those were primaries - challenges from other Democrats, not Republicans.
So before we can tell how serious this is, politically, we'll have to wait and see which Democrats are prepared to try to take advantage of the situation in an election year that will determine control of the state Senate.
Any predictions?
UPDATE: I asked Sabini's spokesman Shams Tarek about a rumor that his boss may want to run for his old City Council seat, which is already drawing interest a number of other likely Democratic candidates.
Tarek dismissed the idea, saying that Sabini is "staying in the State Senate and helping his fellow Democrats take the Majority."

Sabini's record will back him up. Nobody has done more for the neighborhoods in his district.
Sabini is a great guy....lets just hope Monster-rat doesnt use this to resurface
If he gets a primary from an Hispanic, maybe. He has been a good legislator for years and this seems to be his whole life...no wife, no kids, no nothing so I only hope he continues as he can't have further political ambitions in this part of Queens since it is probably more than half minority of some sort. He's paid attention...unlike most of his coworkers.
He's a solid representative and a great friend of his constituents. His work on behalf of all of us will back him up, primary challenge or not.

This little mishap won't interrupt his seat-swap with Helen Sears.
Sabini's a great guy and a great legislator. He'll be fine.
No serious Republican threat?
Azi, have you been paying attention?
Hiram Montserate has been playing footsie with Joe Bruno for months now. You may even have done an item about it. He is being wooed for the new Bruno strategy; run 'em as Dems, keep em as Dems, but have their votes to organize the Senate if the Dems ever take the majority. It's called "the Kruger Strategy", and Sabini has been a target, and is now a bigger one!
Query: has Bruno been sidling up to Kendall Stewart, too?
Gigantor did you steal your analysis from Gatemouth at RM 8...at least give credit, come on...Hirram won't beat Sabini...he has made more and more enemies...scientology wont sell in that district
Are you serious? Did you notice that he barely beat Monserrate last time around? And that was with the full support of the machine? This IS the end of his career.
i agree that sabini is a dedicated public servant. however, i can already see that the media is being less harsh on sabini than they were on karim camara who was also arrested for drunk driving. i wonder why?
Doesnt surpise me that he got caught it was only a matter of time....His career should be questioned if he is a political leader and is here to protect the people then he wouldnt have be doing something so foolish as driving drunk that could potentially kill someone. Personally i would like to see him gone and no where near Council member sears seat...I dont even think he has a chance
This is he first time he is arrested for DWI, but he was stopped a few years ago by Police Officers, but was allowed to walk. I guess his luck ran out. Dont forget that he was only 1 of 2 senators who voted against passing a bill to increase the time for license revocation to people who refused to submit to a breathalizer test. Since he is running for Helen Sears council seat, people should just say no to him. Its time for new blood, with new ideas!!!
John Sabini has been a great state senator! As a volunteer for the Empire State Pride Agenda, I can say that he responded beautifully on the freedom of same-sex couples to marry, gender expression nondiscrimination act, and dignity for all students. He is for equality for all people regardless of ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender expression/identity, My husband and I have met with him and his staff in Albany and Jackson Heights. He is a very responsive politician, in the mold of Assemblymember Ivan Lafayette. We need a Democratic majority in the state senate to pass all three of these important bills and John Sabini has the commitment and experience to make that possible. Furthermore, he is a uniter, who brings people together, which is something very distinctive about politicians in this neighborhood. He is not running for the city council because he showed up for a fundraiser for Democratic District Leader Danny Dromm, who is running for city council. John Sabini appears to know that Danny Dromm, who is known by everyone in the neighborhood, is the best candidate for city council. Danny will be the first gay city council member from Queens.
Cool...
