Serrano vs. Golden (and Dobbs) on Spitzer License Proposal
In case you missed it, here are state Senators Jose Serrano, Jr. and Marty Golden debating Eliot Spitzer's driver's license proposal on CNN the other day.
Watch what happens at the three-minute mark, when Serrano makes the case that “what we need to do is go after those that wish to do harm to this nation, not just have a blanket approach to all immigrants.” The line seems to outrage Lou Dobbs, whose glasses seem perilously close to falling off his face.
Serrano, to his credit, seemed very much to be debating two people at once.
Lou Dobbs is not wearing glasses. Blinders, maybe, but no specs.
In all fairness Senator Serrano is being assaulted on two fronts here. I think what the Senator was trying to get across is that the Democrats stand on this issue nationally has been clear from the get go, wanting the 11 million or so illegal immigrants living in the shadows to come forward. Governor Spitzer's proposal is a step in the right direction. By issuing driver's license's to illegal immigrants there is now a system in place to identify these folks and get them on the rightful path to citizenship.
Furthermore, in regards to this specific proposal Senator Golden's attempt to link a "fear factor" in terms of terrorism are far fetched and weak at best. Common sense needs to prevail in these situations and it is time that we debate these issues in the realm of logic. A true Republican would argue that immigrants that are here illegally do not trust the government and aren't about to line up and present themselves to a state agency as an illegal, therefore this is going to end up being a monumental waste of taxpayer dollars.

This is really a stupid discussion. What really matters is the decision to allow illegal immigrants to work or not. If our government cracks down on the ability of illegal immigrants to work, then this issue will go away on its own. If the government continues to allow illegal immigrants to work, we might as well give them a drivers license.

It's not a stupid discussion, either. Our system of laws on immigration needs full enforcement and all laws and regulations that establish identity need enhancement,such as the increasingly popular "E-Verify" program. From small towns to large cities, to counties to states, to the federal level, we cannot afford to have such a disconnect with our federal rules. (And didn't REAL ID demand such uniformity? Will NY residents be able to get into all federal buildings with their newly-cheapened licenses...?)
After all, if you're using someone else's social security number just how sypathetic should we be to you as so-called "immigrant"? Enough with the sob stories about folks who are basically ID thieves. Ask someone who was cut in the immigration line how badly they feel for these people...
Ultimately, it's the opportunism of those who break the rules to come here (or Americans who employ illegals) who then say that "the system is broken" - you bet it is - because of those who brazen disrespect for our rule of law, like the Governor.
The people who actually don't sincerely believe in border enforcement and immigration policy betray their loyalty to ethnic illegal alien interests by championing such brazen policies.
I'm a long-time traditional Democrat who is sorry to see the first New York Democratic governor in years tar his once-promising career on such a sour, dangerous note.
None of this is "fear," either, but reality in 2007. Bravo to Lou Dobbs to putting this issue front and center.
Mike Redisky you are wrong. The fundamental issue is whether or not the government will enforce the laws and go after EMPLOYERS who hire illegal immigrants. It's not a matter of the government letting illegal immigrants work or not b/c there is no agency nodding at employers saying "it's okay for you to hire illegal immigrants".
I agree that every "pro-immigrant" cause shouldn't be jumped on like a bandwagon because it further hurts the cause of the immigrant, it does not promote it.
