In the latest issue of Men’s Vogue, Will Smith tells the book that, after flirting with Buddhism and Hinduism in the past, he has started to study Scientology with Hollywood pal Tom Cruise. Adding to Mr. Smith’s recent revelation, a source apparently told US Weekly that the I Am Legend star’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, 36, has also become interested in the quasi-religion started by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. In fact, they told the gossip weekly, “She’s more gung-ho about Scientology than Will.”

And that might be saying a lot. Mr. Smith, 39, who was raised in the Baptist church, goes on to say that “Ninety-eight percent of the principles [in Scientology] are identical to the principles of the Bible….I don’t think that because the word someone uses for spirit is ‘thetan’ that the definition becomes any different.” To clarify for those who may not know, a ‘thetan’ is considered by most Scientologists to be a spiritual being—possessing both a mind and body—who has lived through several incarnations.

not a scientologist (not verified) says:

after starring in so many action/science fiction movies, i guess it was inevitable that all that world of make believe would get to mr. smith's head. will, wake up dude.

Dave (not verified) says:

Good for them... Will always came off as someone who could think for himself and not be faltered by rumors and lies.

Tim (not verified) says:

Scientolgy and the Bible are as similar as The Angel of Light & Jesus- The anglel of light is another description in the Bible for a fallen angel known as Lucifer aka Satan. Scientology is the work of a science FICTION writer by the name of l ron hubbard who created an another multi-level marketing Scam where you have to pay your way to become a "spiritually aware being". With Christ there are NO levels- when you simply believe is is who He says He was -the promised Messiah(promised in the old testament), God in the flesh you receive the SPIRIT of GOD...instantaneously by an act called GRACE(undeserved favor). When you simply put your faith in Christ all past issues with God the Father are forgiven & forgotten...forever. You don't have to be rich, or from a good family, or a famous hollywood actor...Jesus' converts weren't big name people, they were fomerly prostitutes(Mary Magdalene), Tax frauds(Matthew), people who were formerly sanctimonious about rituals and religion instead of a real relationship with God(Paul). The ground at the foot of the Cross is level...for everyone of every background...the message unlike scitolgy is simple confess that left on your own you are lost and believe that Jesus is, in his ownb words, The Good shepard and the Only person you must believe in to access the Blessing of God. See John Chapter 14. (oh by the way lron hubbard was a former satan worshipper- just google John Parons, his close black magic practioner and you can see the evidence yourself.)

AWW HELL NAW

Kourtney (not verified) says:

I agree with you, brother!!!

Lizardback (not verified) says:

Will Smith has proven himself to be just as crazy as Cruise, Travolta, and the others who have chosen to believe in religion. L. Ron Hubbard was a hack science fiction writer. I can write better than he could, and I don't even read science fiction. Google "Xenu" and find out for yourself that Scientology is an alien cult. Having such high profile representatives for your religion does wonders for the bank account. Although I wouldn't mind seeing Will jump on Oprah's couch.

Atheist (not verified) says:

HaHa. Hearing you guys argue about Christianity being "right" and Scientology being "wrong" is like listening to an argument between Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny about who is really "real".

John1 (not verified) says:

Haha I have studied Scientology and its the best, one day all of you will find out all of the other very successful and famous people that are involved. Way more than what you even think and there is a reason why.

Craig001 (not verified) says:

As an active Scientologist I’m happy to see that stars like Will Smith are willing to examine a religion before denouncing it – any religion.

Breath of fresh air... no?

Kit (not verified) says:

Man, getting Hollywood stars to give bucket loads of money to cults sure looks easy! I really need to create my own ponzi-scheme religion.

Clambaker USA (not verified) says:

Get real will. Scientology's symbol is a cross with an X through it. Scientology believes that aliens possess people and ruin their lives. Normally I respect Will's opinion but he's dead wrong on this. Like the above poster said, Google Xenu for Operation Clambake and learn how Scientology flouts the law and indoctrinates unsuspecting people who cam to it for help with life problems.

100%Italian (not verified) says:

Will,

I know you are joking right? Have you ever really looked into what Scientology is all about? Have you read Hubbards interviews (especially Penthouse June 1983)? Ron Hubbard states that Scientology is Black Magic. Besides if you research Mr. Hubbards earlier writings, you will see that he believed that African Americans were savaged beast. And you are saying that this is 98% the same as the Bible? What Bible are you reading? C'mon Will you are smarter than this.

Barf (not verified) says:

Prove the existence of L. Ron Hubbard!

Ally (not verified) says:

If Scientology is so great, why don't these "other very successful and famous people that are involved" show themselves? What are they afraid of? If they are truly Scientologists, aren't they proud of their beliefs? Isn't a principle tenet of any religion sharing beliefs in order to convert others? Why would they be hiding?

johnnyk (not verified) says:

Come on Will... you're better than this laughable comic book religion

"According to Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, Xenu was the dictator of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of his people to Earth in DC-8-like spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes and killed them using hydrogen bombs. Scientology holds that their essences remained, and that they form around people in modern times, causing them spiritual harm" via
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xenu

Will, you wouldn't even accept a role in a movie based on a plot this bad!

keepinitreal (not verified) says:

yeah, funny how no one seems as interested in conversations on the topic of the existence of Mr. Claus... Nice comparison... dork...

BGMAN (not verified) says:

Atheist...in principle, maybe you have a point. Regardless what you think of any other religion, Scientology is a pay as you go...at least with other religions, anyone can get the information without having to buy the copywrited material.

Slagkilde (not verified) says:

I think no one can deny that religious people do better than non-religious - exept off course from religious fanatics - and many scientologist are doing a great job too.
1000s of people owe their lives to the scientology teams that go out and help in disaster areas.
Will Smith seems like a good guy and I believe he will make a fine member of the church of scientology.

so sad in NC (not verified) says:

Well, I guess since Tom couldn't deliver on the Beckhams, he had to work extra-hard to snare an even bigger name for David Miscavige.

Will, what a disappointment. Now many people will put a mental asterisk next to your name, just like Travolta*, Cruise*, Kirstie Alley*, etc.

(* = "Well, s/he's a good actor, but totally whacked out on that Scientoligy crap....)

Tiarra (Christian) (not verified) says:

It's amazing how people who were raised on Jesus Christ and have reaped the benefits of following Him (success, wealth, safety, health, etc.) have turned on Him once they have reached a certain "status." I don't see anything wrong with studying other religions to gain a wealth of knowledge, but one shouldn't deny God in the process. There are many similarities in the principles of different religions and teachings, and it's ok to accept those teachings as long as they don't conflict with your foundation. The Bible tells us that if we deny Him (Jesus Christ) before men, He will deny us before his Father in Heaven and the Angels. Hopefully, Will will realize that sooner than later.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

this is what comes from living the hollywood life. the bible and god comes last. so stars are prey for the latest fad religion, and i feel so sorry for their children. will says scientolgy lines up with the bible. i wonder what bible he's been reading. it surely can't have been the one i read. in my bible jesus is my savior and the savior of anyone who will only accept his gift of salvation. we need to pray for tom, katie, john, and all the others in these false religions that they will see that there is one true way. the way of our lord and savior. hell is a verrry real place and noone wants to go there. and without accepting jesus that's where a lot of people will end up i'm afraid following these false religions such as scientolgy, jehovah's witnesses, and others.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

I read some where that Hubbard made a bet with someone that he could invent a religion and thus Scientology was born.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Yeah, I think it was meant to be a bet with fellow science fiction writer Robert Heinlein. It's a pity Heinlein didn't come up with a religion instead, I'm sure it would be a lot cooler. And, given where the man's mind was in his later ouvre, involve lots of orgies.

Brad (not verified) says:

Scientology saved my life. It's the science of the mind and how the mind works. It's amazing. Will smith is happy. Just look at his goofy ass jumping around. I wish I was that happy. people who criticize religions are miserable people who really have no desire to help others. They should be ignored.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

You should try reading a book on Scientology and understand the subject before you comment on it and make yourself look like an ass:) lol

Official Dj Plasmic Nebula (not verified) says:

don't worry will will see the light. :)

GOD won't stop. :) God loves all

john 3:16-17

plus you never know if Will actually is a devoted sciencetologist .. but we must pray for those who are lost like Will, Tom, KAtie..etc. :)D

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Gosh, I'm so glad I'm just a plain old Jew.

Paul (not verified) says:

I'm all for people believing and following whatever religion they choose (or none at all). In fact, I encourage individual thinking. The two things I don't like, however, are: (1) people trying to force their belief or non-belief on others; and (2) religions, cults, or organizations that are elitist and money-driven.

Scientology is a "religion" where you must pay to gain favour. That's just disgusting to me. That's why you see a lot of celebrities in Scientology. It's the religion that praises money and excess -- the exact opposite of most other world religions.

The Tyrant (not verified) says:

Will Smith has been hanging around Tom Cruise for too long. He will loose a few fans for this and I am one of them.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Ok it is official the whole world is going crazy.

It's a religion based on a FN novel, a really crappy novel!
