2008 Bicycle Film Festival Kicks Off Tonight at Studio B
Pitchfork reminds us that the New York edition of the 2008 Bicycle Film Festival kicks off 9 p.m. tonight at Studio B in Greenpoint. (There are a few hipster bike messenger types in that neck of the woods, no?) This evening’s event, the aptly titled “Bikes Rock,” will be the first of five consecutive days of citywide film, music and art programming celebrating that manual, green (and, in urban areas, dare we say a bit dangerous?) form of two-wheeled transportation that is the bicycle:
Blonde Redhead's Simone Pace will provide a live score for Danish filmmaker Jørgen Leth's 1974 cycling film Den Umulige Time (The Impossible Hour), while Soft Circle and Daniel Leeb of Cinecycle Productions will present a multimedia piece that incorporates sounds made using bicycle parts. Additionally, there will be performances from Lucky Dragons, Chairlift, and Sweatshop Labor, plus some bicycle-powered turntablism!
Tomorrow: An art opening at 40 Great Jones (near Bowery) followed by an after-party at Lit with Paul Sevingy as DJ. And then over the weekend, lots and lots and lots of movies about bikes. The full schedule is here. Also, in case you didn't know, May is the 17th annual Bike Month in NYC.
The 2008 bicycle film Festival sounds really interesting. I wish I could be there. However I live in Portland, Oregon. We have a lot of interesting bicycle events here also. I like to ride. I appreciate the greenness of bicycle riding, but I also like to enjoy myself on a sport bike. There's nothing quite like riding really, really, really fast.
