Amiri, Meet Aronofsky! Mickey Rourke Brokers Intro Between Doorman and Director

This article was published in the January 28, 2008, edition of The New York Observer.

Now that Armin Amiri’s West Village nightclub Socialista is on “cruise control,” as he puts it, New York’s most famous former doorman is getting back to his first love.

“You know I only have one true passion in my heart, and that is acting,” said Mr. Amiri, who recently snagged a role in director Darren Aronofsky’s new movie, The Wrestler. He will play the doctor to Mickey Rourke’s character, an aging, steroid-abusing wrestler who has just undergone heart surgery.

“When I was a kid, Mickey was one of the people, along with Al Pacino, who I always dreamed of working with,” said Mr. Amiri. “It’s one of those cases of ‘Watch out what you ask for.”’

Nary a week goes by in which Mr. Rourke can’t be found enjoying the services of Mr. Amiri’s bar; Mr. Amiri said that the two are close friends, but insists that he got the part fair and square. “I just auditioned and I got it,” he said. “Darren”—husband of Oscar winner Rachel Weisz, whom he cast in the 2006 sci-fi clunker The Fountain—“is a genius. I don’t think he’d fuck around with his art.”

Filming is slated to begin in two weeks in New Jersey. A jazzed Mr. Amiri added: “By the way, Socialista just started doing a real cute Monday night party. You should stop by!”
