Dear David Duchovny, Did It Have to Be Sex Addiction?
Oh David Duchovny. We’re so sad to hear the news that you have checked yourself into rehab for sex addiction. Sex addiction sounds like a totally exhausting thing to have to keep up with, and we can’t even begin to imagine how out-of-control things must have gotten to give a quote to the public about it. We know you’ve asked for respect and privacy for your wife and children (we totally love you too, Téa!), and we totally feel you on that, but here’s the thing we keep wondering. Would it or would it not be less embarrassing (and career damaging) for you and your family if you said the rehab was for some sort of drug or alcohol addiction? Something prescription (of course) and easily mended….or that old standby of ‘exhaustion’ we hear so many celebrities suffer? It just seems like such an intimate thing to admit to – and while we appreciate the honesty, it seems like it will be harder for everyone (particularly your wife) to have to answer to when you get out. Regardless, we hope you get well soon.

Here's the thing: He was already in rehab when the National Enquirer found out, so he had to do a pre-emptive strike and announce it before they did. It's really sad, I've been reading about sex addiction and some of the things he's said in interviews - like he lost his virginity at 14 and has been obsessed with sex ever since - are very telling. His life must have gotten out of control - no doubt thanks to the show he's on - for him to seek help for it. Shame.
I think that it is great that he came out publicly with this. Sex addiction is real -- just as much, or even harder to deal with than other addictions such as alcohol or drugs. I know this because I have been dealing with this same addiction since childhood. It is time that society realize this, and I applaud Mr. Duchovny for having the courage to admit this publicly.
Totally agree that it's fantastic that he admitted it was sex addiction rather than hide behind a less "embarrassing" label. It is exactly this sort of attitude - well that and the old 'nudge nudge wink wink' or dismissive 'it's not a real addiction' - thinking that makes it so very hard for sex addicts to own up to it being a problem (which anyone with even a fleeting familiarity with AA principles knows is the first step to getting help).
It's high time society accepted it's a real problem - that can cause huge devastation for addicts, their loved ones and their families -- and started treating it just like any other addiction. 40 years ago people were saying alcoholism wasn't a 'real' addiction too you know.
Kudos and great admiration to Duchovny for being brave enough to tell it like it is. Here's sending strength and healing to him and his family, especially Tea.
