Bloomberg and the World's Health
Michael Bloomberg joined the general director of the World Health Organization this morning, Dr. Margaret Chan, to release world-wide statistics on smoking that say a billion people will die because of smoking by the end of the century unless steps are taken now to prevent it.
“I’m a big believer in the idea that if you can’t measure a problem, you obviously can’t manage it,” Bloomberg told reporters assembled at the press conference in Midtown this morning. He said, “the more countries that pass smoke free laws, the more we will be able to help people.”
Bloomberg said he contributed $2 million to conduct the study. Chan told reporters that it was a natural choice to make the announcement with the mayor of New York rather than a national or international figure.
“I don’t have to sing your praises,” Chan told Bloomberg in front of reporters. “Your record speaks volumes to your commitment for public health.”
Not a bad endorsement.
