Clinton Ally Sarah Kovner Goes to an Obama Fund-Raiser

Sarah Kovner, a longtime supporter of Hillary and Bill Clinton, a close associate of Harold Ickes and a lion of New York's liberal political establishment, attended a fund-raiser for Barack Obama last night, according to two attendees. The event, was held at the East End Avenue home of money manager Eric Schwartz.
"That's a major statement on Hillary's campaign that one of her strongest advocates and one of Harold Ickes' closest associates was there," said one influential Clinton fund-raiser, when told of Kovner's attendance at the Obama fund-raiser. "That is an earthquake. Everyone recognized Hillary was down for the count, but it is a major thing for her to jump ship."
Kovner is a member of the New York Women for Hillary Council, served as the Deputy Director of the New York State Clinton-Gore campaign and was a special assistant to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services throughout the Clinton administrations. Active in a wide range of women's groups, she acted as a government representative to the Interagency Committee on Women’s Business Enterprise and the representative to the UN Commission on the Status of Women from 1993 until 2000.
Kovner could not immediately be reached for comment.
UPDATE: Kovner says that she's declaring for Obama because the primary contest is already decided and that it's time for Democrats to come together against John McCain.

It is reassuring to know that at least some of Hillary's supporters have thrown off the effects of the Kool-Aid and are re-entering reality.
Sad, just too damn sad.
Im a conservative white guy and I would have voted for her because dhe's got the most guts. Too Too Bad...
It's time; thank you for your support Sarah Kovner. The party & all it's supporters need to rally behind Sen. Barack Obama. He has inspired millions & brought countless new Democrats into the fold. Standing together we CAN & WILL make a difference this time around.
Welcome aboard the O Train, Sarah! It's time for Hillary to do the same. United we stand, divided we fall!!!
Gotta know when to fold them, Senator Clinton. The more she campaigns against Obama, the more work Obama will have to do to turn people to him within the party.
The "fighting" Clinton should have materialized instead of the "experienced" Clinton at the beginning of the campaign, and would have made a difference in the voting for her. She simple chose the wrong theme at a time people are hurgry to change how things work in DC, rather than how to work things in DC. No one should force her out, but she needs to make that decision now. The money people like Sarah Kovner leaving the ship ought to give her a hint.
This is getting downright Shakespearian.
This is very encouraging news. Thank you Sarah.
Obama passed another test tonight. Democrat Travis Childers won a republican seat in Mississippi by 8 points. The district went 62% for Bush in 2004. The republicans tried to tie Childers to Obama and Rev Wright! It failed. Therein down-ballot democratic candidates will not have to worry.
This is the 3rd special election democrats have won in very red republican districts. The GOP still do not get it. Voters hunger for solutions not politics as usual. Voters do not want more war, economic insecurity, nor fewer civil rights. We do not approve of torture, death and destruction the GOP offers either. We want fiscal sanity with grown-ups in charge.
Americans are desperate for a new direction and real leadership. McCain is neither an agent of change nor has he displayed leadership qualities. The fact that Sarah saw the writing on the wall gives me hope that voters will come together to support Obama. I think a lot has to do with the manner in which Hillary concedes. Yes she is a fighter, but there is a time when defeat is at the door. Meanwhile Obama has moved-on.
Don't think that all the high-profile Dems falling for Obama's empty rhetoric (change we can believe in...give me a break, please) and turning their backs on Clinton aren't being put on a list. Richardson, Reich, Kovner...oh yes, their backstabbery will be remembered, regardless of who is in the White House in November.

So many people talk about Hillary Clinton (so called) experience. Let me see she was the first lady and has been involved in so many scandals that never came up in her run for Presidency(oh I forgot she was never found guilty. But thats fine. Let me see who is in the office now George Bush And Dick Cheney oh with so much experience the world is in turmoil and guess what they dont care about fixing it. Especially when President Bush is playing golf(nothing) wrong with golf. Our young men and women are out their being killed each day on the front line is this not acceptable. When he needs to be sitting at the oval table to determine when they are going to bring these wonderful people back home. America needs to wake up and stop living a freaking dream world. Things will get worse before they get better. Back in the day we have had some inexperience presidents that did great things for this country. America needs to stop be so close minded about everything. Everything will turn out for the best.
There is no doubt in my mind that BARACK OBAMA will do the best for America.
The guy is running not for his personal benefit but for the good of all Americans,Unlike some that are after personal records and more gratification.(They want to be like Angela Merkel of Germany or Ellen Sirleef Johnson of Liberia.)
But the voters have choosen and like the Times said"The WINNER is.......BARACK OBAMA."
And be assured that he will WIN in November no matter what they say about so called "hard working white Americans".
BARACK OBAMA.REALIZING THE AMERICAN DREAM.
Yes, and don't forget that she had something like #$200 million at the start of her campaign and now she's in debt. Great experience credentials.
"and turning their backs on Clinton aren't being put on a list. Richardson, Reich, Kovner...oh yes, their backstabbery will be remembered, regardless of who is in the White House in November."
why so bitter, anon?
Welcome Sarah. Obama has a big tent and we welcome all Dems committed to winning back the White House.
Welcome, Sarah. Let's win in November.
What I find both amazing and absolutely appalling is that the same political pundits and former powerbrokers who were pushed aside by the Clinton revolution (when women, Latinos and people of color were given positions and posts in record numbers when Bill Clinton first took office) are now driving the Obama bandwagon. The same way George Bush was turned into a puppet for the GOP, Obama's message of change is a ruse for the former DNC white boys' club to get back into office--this time on the back of a black man.
Man is the operative word here. All men, including men of color, have gotten their voices heard and their votes registered and their money earned before any woman ever has. Check the facts: even with the history of slavery and racism in the US, black men have gotten to vote, have held political office, have received both sports and academic scholarships, have been nominated to the Supreme Court, have earned all levels of academic degrees and have been incorporated into the business world before any woman--even a white woman--ever has.
I have heard arguments that Hillary is benefitting from "white privilege" and suffering from "white entitlement." What people fail to recognize is that this privilege and entitlement has historically been given to white MEN. Women, no matter their race, color, creed, culture and orientation, have always been told to wait by their male counterparts. All men (white, black, Latino, Asian, NAmerican) have achieved at the expense of all women.
Hillary may be a flawed candidate (so is Obama with his inexperience and lack of substantive achievements), but she represents the greatest threat to US politics ever. Hillary represents a complete changing of the guard: never has a woman in US history ever been so close to pushing a man to the side and earning the top spot. Ironically, political pundits have been trying to push Hillary out for the past few months.
This is not a nomination process about race only; it is a nomination about gender politics. All of those artists making Obama videos should read their history and investigate the people driving the Obama limos. The boys' club, the white boys' club, has put on blackface, wrapped up their message in ribbons of unity talk and called it "equity and change." The truth is that Obama (a seemingly honest and nice guy) is being used so they can get their power back and the only change is the change we, the working poor, will have left in our pockets.
We, the Puerto Rican people, should vote on both who the messenger is and what message is. Let the nomination process play its course. Let the people decide. While I have become a stronger Hillary supporter because of her tenacity and her absolute I'll-never-give-up-no-matter-how-many-times-you-beat-me-down attitude, I urge my Puerto Rican people to ignore the fanfare and truly investigate the candidates and vote according to who is truly going to address our cultural needs. The videos may say, Obama; I say, "tu mama." Vote Hillary. Pa'lante Puerto Rico!
