Velazquez: Obama Needs Clinton's Latinos

Before Hillary Clinton’s speech last night at Baruch College, Representative Nydia Velazquez waded into a thicket of reporters and explained why she thinks Barack Obama should choose Clinton as a running mate.

“The Latino community sees her as a Hispanic leader,” Velazquez said. “And for whatever reason, it seems to me that there is a problem of connecting with Latino voters from the Obama camp.”

I asked her why she that was.

“Even in the early primaries, to the last primary that was conducted in Puerto Rico, she won overwhelmingly," she said. "In Arizona, 63 percent. In New York, 72 percent. In Puerto Rico, it was overwhelming. In Texas [too]. So, something wasn’t working, or is not working and I think she will be able to help him in that regard.”

I asked Velazquez if she thought Clinton would be better able to connect to Latino voters than, say, Bill Richardson.

“Well, Bill Richardson is not running for president," she responded. "And after Bill Richardson endorsed Obama, he lost the support in the Latino community. She continued to win.”

"After Bill Richardson endorsed Obama, show me one state where Obama won the Latino vote," she said. "That’s the point.”

At one time Bill Clinton was called the first black President. Nice thought but wrong. Likewise Hillary won't be the first latino VP. If Bill richardson was on the ticket & they win in November, HE WILL BE THE FIRST LATINO VP. I think it would be a great team. Real Change..not just talk and political bassa.

SAY NO, NO TO HILLARY ... (not verified) says:

BILL RICHARDSON IS THE LATINO MAN ---- NO to HILLARY.

OBAMA DON'T NEED NO PHONY LIKE HILLARY ON HIS TICKET.

HILLARY WOULD BE THE "POISON PILL" ON OBAMA'S TICKET.

Statistically, latin voters are the worst kind of voters! Obama don't need them. Latin in this country are nothing but piggy backers! Bill Richardson is the wrong choice. Remember, latin think everything should be given to them. Look at those puerto ricans.

Anon 12:29: It's always easy to spot you GOPbots at work. So today, your assignment is to spread defamatory crap about Latinos and make it sound as if it's coming from an Obama supporter. Get back in your box!

Self-importance is everywhere. Obama doesn't need this kind of threat and would see through it in a minute.

How helpful is Rep. Velazquez to the Latino community? I recall hearing complaints from her constituents that they couldn't get any help from her office.

Ricardo Martinez (not verified) says:

Guess what I'm Latino- I live in her district and I voted for Obama. After Bill Richardson endorsed Obama, Obama had 48% of latinos. Before he was closer to 30%. THERE WAS A RICHARDSON EFFECT.
People like this simply refuse to admit that this is a GENERATIONAL thing- not a race issue. Young latinos gave Obama a chance, older stayed loyal. just look at texas newspapers.
Velazquez, I no longer respect you right here, right now.
Look like a little too much plastic surgery by the way.

James (not verified) says:

Dear Represenative Nydia Velazquez,

I write this as one of your constituents in Brooklyn NY.

Yesterday it was being reported on national news (MSNBC) that on a conference call with Hillary Clinton you asked her a question with a statement that I found extremely offensive and has no part in this campaign or in the Democratic Party. This report by The New York Observer is further evidence of your illogical comments.

Especially on a night when our nominee won the nomination and our pivot for the general election began.

I have been living in New York since 1995 but grew up in New Mexico, and Texas. I have many Latino friends and family members from Puerto Rico, Mexico, and South America not to mention the continental United States who have supported Barack Obama.

Today you said you said that Latinos would not vote for Barack Obama unless Hillary Clinton was on the ticket. Not only is this offensive, but it is factually inaccurate, and divisive. Not only is it an insult to Latinos, but also to your constituents, and to the presumptive Presidential Nominee.

Both Hillary and Barack have run amazing campaigns and both have had supporters from every walk of life. In New Mexico Hillary won the state by half a percentage point and Barack would not have been able to do that without support from Latino voters there. The highest elected Latino official in the US, Bill Richardson, endorsed Obama.

Parts of your district went overwhelmingly for Barack Obama. So I found it very offensive for you to suggest that Latinos would not have the foresight to decipher between the major differences between Barack Obama and John McCain unless Hillary Clinton was on the ticket.

I would support Hillary if she was the nominee without Barack on the ticket. And I will support Barack if Hillary is not on the ticket. The comments you made today have no place in our party. As a Puerto Rican woman I would hope that you are able to support our nominee even if Hillary is not on the ticket regardless of your biased comments.

Cristina from TX (not verified) says:

You tell them, Rep. Velazquez! Bill Richardson is a joke to Latinas in particular now. Clinton won Latino and Latina voters all over the place. I'm glad she put Richardson in his place. Hillary Clinton is the only one appealing to Latinas.

NydiaHater (not verified) says:

So Nydia, it seems the only agenda you have is for Latinos and what it does for you politically. You sound so ignorant and are just exploiting your heritage towards your own advantage.

Of course, you failed to mention that Obama conceded Puerto Rico to Clinton and only campaigned one day and considering being unknown, lost by 35% points. Had he run competively it would have been a lot different.

Latino politicians as yourself are the scurge of American politics because your own office has received its fair share of complaints of not representing the people you serve. Nydia is a permanent campaigner and to make such outrageous remarks that Latinos are a monolith and won't vote for Obama is offensive, but shows your true character.

Why not mention that Bill Clinton pardoned Puerto Rican "nationalists" that bombed and killed innocent Americans on American soil?

You are a physically and politically hideous "woman"?

Anonymous (not verified) says:

As a latin-american myself, here in California, it is not a huge issue here. She won California, not where I'm in (bay area) because latinos have the name recognition, but if you have seen lately, in California, and New York, 2 big states Hillary won, Obama has over a double digit lead in electability now. It only takes time for someone to see the true inner person, and we saw, and no nos gustamos. Most latinos I know voted for Obama, and come election time, the ones who did not, will. I hope this can send a message also to the black/brown dispicable things going on in Southern Cali, we can work together for the greater good. Latinos for Obama anyone? Hillary is a pig, and does not deserve to even run for office again in NY, or any other political arena. She lost after cheating, and still wants a hand out? No, gracias!

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Until Nydia Velazquez made these incendiary remarks I had no idea who she was. But I think it is safe to say she certainly is not the voice of the Latino people. My wife and I both of whom are Hispanic are completely behind Obama. We both feel that Clinton in the vp slot detracts rather than improves our feelings of the ticket.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

All these immature comments from Obama supporters are enough to turn off any and all voters who might come over to him-attacking latinos and white voters has become a nasty habit you might want to think about from here on-Latino voters after all went to gw bush in the last election, as did soccer mons and independants and no one drove them away- YOU are making an effort to do so-I suggest you grow up and play video games and come back when you can be involved in politics like a responsable adult-and that goes for you who ARE adults

Gerry222 (not verified) says:

Velazquez and other Latino public officials ought to be careful what they say at this time. Latinos are the largest minority and will increasingly have their candidates come before the public eye. Latinos will need the votes of other minorities if they intend to capture state and national offices. What goes around, comes around.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez is perfectly right in saying that the Obama camp has not shown any respect for Latinos.
What Obama people seen not to look at is that the sates needed to win the election in November have a high Latino voting population.
Obama could not make take the time in his election campaign to be interviewed by the Latino television in
February.
Some of the comments I have heard and read made about Latinos makes me not want to vote.

Latinos like all other minorities have paid their dues to make this country rich and powerful.
Now as a Puerto Rican, I will tell Obama and everyone else that Puerto Ricans have paid their dues with the blood of every Puerto Rican who fought in United States war since World War I.

Please show some respect for the only Puerto Rican woman in Congress who does know about loyalty to principles and beliefs.
These comments and attitudes will not help Obama win the election or the party.

LatinaRebecca (not verified) says:

Isn't this really a moot point ..... per Donna Brazile on CNN, Obama will not need the Latinos to win in Nov. Let's let Obama decide and see how/if he reaches out to us. Or who he sends to reach out to us. Personally, Richardson won't work for me, I can't stand the guy - and this sentiment was in place way before he endorsed Obama. He was an absolute idiot during the debates...embarrassing.

The one Thing Obama try to change its the first thing he does very well..He is a great Politician, He will do anything to get elected.(even drop from his church.the church than married him and baptize his children for like G W Bush. Why people never question his honesty ? or He does not pay attention whats going around him?.Its just simple he and his wife Belong to a church and its hard to me to believe , very hard to believe than they never heard about the inflammatory remarks of his pastor than he says it was so close to him like an uncle, his personal spiritual adviser.Come on even if they were not there that day.Remarks like that stay in the people of the church and someone, someone ..someone has to told them about it.its just plain logic.they knew it about it . And stay with that church for 20 years? The pastor being his personal spiritual adviser? Come on Wake up people.I want to believe him but i cant sounds so untrue, and it will be worst than he never knew the things going around him for so many years that will make him a person than doesn't knows whats really going around Him..How is he going to lead this country like that? Some one Tell me

The presumptuousness of this woman is galling. This Latino man, his Latino father, Latino sister, Latino cousins and millions of other Latinos have long made up our minds who we can trust, and the answer is Barack Obama.
Of course Latinos in NY voted for her-- it's her state! Of course Puerto Ricans voted for her-- it's hugely connected to New York! Elsewhere the Latino vote was closer, and there is no indication that Latinos in those areas who preferred her in the primary DON'T like him-- they just knew her better.
Mira, esa mujer no sabe nada.
Y ustedes quien estan diciendo que Obama no mostra el respeto a los Latinos no saben nada... el ha tenido un bien grande "outreach" a los hispanos-- yo se, porque yo soy parte de uno.

Rep. Velasquez, perhaps if you open your eyes (and shut your gran boca) you'll realize that one of the reasons Senator Obama won and Senator Clinton lost, is because he was above the constant fighting, division and labeling that Senator Clinton and her supporters use so much. She lost sight of the fact that by fighting so much, she turned into the very thing she fought against. In other words, she was her own worst enemy. We're all sick and tired of that stuff. Senator Obama represents change and hope and is so inspiring. I, being a middle-aged Hispanic woman, am proud to support Senator Obama. And I'll do everything in my power to convince mis hermanos, hermanas, y compañeros to support him and vote for him in November. Y si todavia no te gusta, me vale!

Richardson couldn't win his own primary race, he won't win for Obama. I got a mailing during Richardson's bid for Presidency and right at the top of the page were photos of Richardson in 'caring" and "sincere" poses and with different groups of citizens, AND right in the top corner was a photo of him an Bill Clinton walking together smiling. He used his past employment by Bill Clinton to boost himself to potential voters,.......and then after he stopped his campaign, did he support Clinton, no Richardson went over to Obama. Shows you, never help someone who think of as a friend, they will backstab you later. No one would know Richardson if he hadn't ben in Clinton's adminstration. I sure as hell didn't know him before that.

Obama-Clinton ticket is the wrong ticket and Hillary knows why.

Obama can not and will not have Bill walking around the White House thinking that he is still the president and Obama is the hired help.
Hillary and Bill has too much baggage, too many unanswered question about them ie, how have they made all their money, and there is still some unanswered questions about the library etc.
Bill can not keep his hands off the ladies-(he's a whoremongerer) which is shameful in itself.
Barack is a gentleman. But I am telling you Michele is not going to put up with Hillary and her lies and her bull%hit. The Clinton's have proven that they will and have done anything to win. They thought that because they were well known and that the White House was somehow owed to them, that there was no way Barack would win. And that Barack was not black too, it is sad but they thought that because a white woman (a Clinton) up agaist a black man that they would be in like flint.
!!!NEWS FLASH!!! Hillary he is not only black, he's smart, intelligent, honest and very likeable too (unlike you.
I even like you during your hey day before I really got to know the spirit in you. The spirit in you is vicious.
Don't be a sore loser Hillary, everybody can not win, anyway it is not who win or lose it's how you play the game. You could have still won inspite of yourself had you lost graciously but you would not know anything about that would you. Had you played fair you surely could count on at least being considered for the Veep post. But after the lies, scheming, back-stabbing, treating him like a second-class citizens. But Hillary all is not lost, you can still be winner you can go down in history as Barack 's biggest supporter. You can re-gain all the respect and admoration that was lost. You say that he is your friend--prove yourself to be a true friend now, at this critical hour.

Hillary, you are not as smart as I thought that you were. I could teach you people skills which would take you far in life and people would like you much more. All those 18M votes that you claim you got, let me clue you in sister
(republicans)they were not voting for you they were voting against Barack because they thought you would be easier to beat in the general eletions.

The President and the Veep should at least be able to get along well, this is oil and water.

We (voters) made Obama history (first black nominee) Obama should continue with the theme Bill Richardson (first hispanic Veep). Besides Bill has been there before he was in the Clinton administration he held two different post. Therefore, he has the experience.
