Democrat Aubertine Wins
Democrat Darrell Aubertine won today's special election in the heavily Republican 48th state Senate district upstate, defeating Republican Will Barclay.
This officially reduces Joe Bruno's Republican control in that house to just one seat.
Aubertine got 27,712 votes, compared to Barclay's 25,001 votes, according to the unofficial breakdown of election results from the three counties that cover the district:
Oswego County (98% reporting):
13,290-Will Barclay
7,759-Darrell Aubertine
St. Lawrence County (100% reporting):
4,084-Will Barclay
6,502-Darrell Aubertine
Jefferson County (99% reporting):
7,627-Will Barclay
13,451-Darrel Aubertine
In addition to Aubertine, thoughts on other winners tonight?

The dems have to be really excited about their prospects come nov. the state seems to be trending democratic and should dems run moderates in places like north country where it's more practical to win, they should take over the senate come jan 1. not to mention the large fundraising advantage they have over the gop.
Bruno needs 32 votes to pass legislation. his conference now has 32 members. One, Caesar Trunzo is on a longterm convalesence. i order to do anything, he's either got to drag Trunzo back to Albany, or get a Democrat to vote with him.
Putsch has clearly come to shove.
what does this say about the upcoming race in the 25th congressional district?
Uncle Joe still has his boy Carl Kruger with him until it makes sense for crookger to cut a deal w the dems because he does watever is good for him at any cost.
Wee!! What an outstanding turnout. Looks like the GOP will pick that seat up again come the next election. How stupid can you upstaters be!!! Go ahead, sell New York down the drain.
We wish to congratulate State Senator-Elect Aubertine on his well-deserved victory.
We are now just one seat away from taking back a majority in the New York State Senate and we believe that tonight's victory shows that people want a change. Our win upstate tonight gives us the momentum that we need to take back the two Republican-held Senate seats here in Queens County that will push us over the top and make Joe Bruno the Senate Minority Leader. We look forward to working with the DSCC and State Party to achieve this goal.

Congratulations to Senator-Elect Aubertine. I'm very pleased that Mr. Aubertine won in a district that has a huge GOP advantage. As NY Democrats we are one step closer to taking control of the State Senate, a very exciting victory for Progresive NYers.

Silverstein, everyone's looking forward to the QCYD actually working for once on something. I don't think we're holding our breath.
Matthew,
Change!!?? If people want change, why don't they freaking change the makeup of the Democratically controlled state house?? You failed to mention that. How long has it been controlled by Dems with a supermajority, hmmm?? I want its makeup to change, when can I expect the "people" of New York to make that change?
New York voters are idiots, and deserve all the suffering they get. God help us when we become like New Jersey and a total one party state.
I commend the entire NY Dems organization for this historic win. What a night!
Republicans in the Senate need to clean house.
Firing the top campaign guy and promoting his deputy means absolutely nothing will change.
They need to reach outside their loyal yes-men and hire some professionals.
RE: Big news is Aubertine defeating Barclay up in the hard-fought 48th SD, 30,000 MORE GOPers then Dems………
Dear NY GOP……….
1 - I noticed that all in GOP Leadership have “Albany Tunnel Vision” to NOT see that those in your own Political Party have Abandoned you and left you all in the dust.
2 - That is because the New York GOP Leadership has signed onto the “Liberal Democratic Tax & Spend Policies” that ALL New Yorkers see today. NY GOP has also signed onto some of the “Highest Taxes Increases” that New Yorkers have ever seen in this State. We expected increases from Liberal Democrats but not Republicans.
3 - The NY GOP forced “Grass Roots” to Accept “Liberals” such as Howard Mills, Jean Pirro, Bill Weld & of course the master plan of giving All New Yorkers another Liberal as Rudy Guiliani for President.
The “Grass Roots” rejected the Liberal Philosophy of this Liberal GOP Game Plan.
4 - Where was the New York GOP voice when the Party Leadership & Governor Pataki trashed cherished conservative values? GOP Chairman Sandy (I stand for Nothing) Treadwell was also silent when the GOP:
Abandoned his opposition to Medicaid abortion funding;
Pledged to remove the pro-life plank from the Republican National Platform;
Ended the “conscience clause” for religious medical institutions thus forcing them to provide services contrary to their religious principles;
Signed into law the state gay rights bill;
Signed into law the hate crimes bill.
As for gun control, there is no record of Treadwell or the NY GOP Leadership opposing Pataki’s March 2000 proposal, which The New York Times described as “perhaps the widest ranging gun controls in the county”
5 - Finally, I and the others who DO NOT have “Albany Tunnel Vision” told you all that this was going to happen….That the “Voters” & “Grass Roots” will walk away from a “Clueless”, “Gutless” and “I stand for nothing” NY GOP.
Some of the County Chairman across the State and ALL of the “Grass Roots” have been saying this was going to happen, but know one with the “Albany Tunnel Vision” would listen to them. And CLEARLY for a year now you have been reading mine and others opinions on this board.
GOP come back to your Conservative roots.
