Ferraro Defends Herself to Diane Sawyer

In the wake of comments she made about Barack Obama that have drawn criticism from both his campaign and the press (and then further comments that were even more controversial), Clinton finance committee-member Geraldine Ferraro made the rounds to morning shows today.

In case you missed it, here's a clip from her interview with Diane Sawyer, in which Ferraro says she has not heard from Clinton and maintains that her comments were taken out of context.

Clinton previously said, when asked, that she did "not agree" with Ferraro.

Obama said in an interview this morning, "Part of what I think Geraldine Ferraro is doing, and I respect the fact that she was a trailblazer, is to participate in the kind of slice and dice politics that's about race and about gender."

Down With Ferraro & Hillary (not verified) says:

.
FERRARO PROVES THAT IF YOU ARE RICH AND A POLITICALLY CONNECTED DEMOCRAT YOU CAN USE THE 'RACE CARD' ANYTIME YOU FIND YOURSELF LOSING.
.

Ferraro plays to prejudice & fear (not verified) says:

No one should be calling Ferraro a racist; there is no evidence of that. She is however using the Hillary tactic of 'fear & prejudice.' Hillary people raise the RACE ISSUE to arose prejudice and its resultant fear in the minds of some voters. Ferraro also said that Obama was "lucky" to be black. Does anyone believe that is a sincere statement by Ferraro??? I guess Ferraro regrets being white & rich. It is now becoming clear why the Mondale/Ferraro ticket was such a disaster for the Democrats. Geraldine Ferraro is a dope.

Geraldine or Gerald - don't know which name to refer to you as. Instead of H Clinton shrugging her shoulders and saying she doesn't agree - she needs to insist on Ferraro's resignation. She clearly understands how divisive this comment is and was intended to be. Time to Go Ferraro - resignation accepted - C YA!!
Lets hope that the NY Gov sex scandal story does not cause this story and the need for Ferraro's resignation to get lost in the shuffle.

The woman had good intentions - she wanted to put a good word and help her buddy Hillary out and while trying to do that her true colors came out. Jikes. Now she is in damage control - but her intention was to put Obama in that position of trying to justify that it is okay for a black man to run for president. To a certain extent - Geraldine succeeded. Race card is on the table.

I am now making my mind - giving up this are- the Clinton Machine is worst in political movements that we have seen in recent times - perhaps in the same league as GB. They use the minority vote. They do it consciously.

Please who lack genuineness- they are the ones that you need to watch out for

Either do not vote, go with Nader or McCain

i don't think the comments on here are particularly insightful, because ferraro's comments were taken out of context. they happen to be a true statement about obama, that he is in the right place at the right time. she wasn't saying he's not qualified.

it's not clinton's campaign that's playing the race card, it's obama's any time anyone disagrees with him. wake up! even the wall street journal suggests this. "Is it just us, or does Barack Obama seem a mite too quick to play the race card when facing criticism from political opponents?" writes The Wall Street Journal editorial board.

You are so wrong. Why don't you research what it is your talking about rather than jumping on the bandwagon to make such a ignorant statement about a woman you don't even know. Mrs. Ferraro has made a career of standing up for equality and the less fortunate, so give her the benefit of the doubt that her statement about Mr. Obama was taken out of context by a heavily-biased press. What she was saying is that Mr. Obama is where he is because of the overwhelming black voter support he has gotten across the nation. Is that wrong, do you dispute that? Why else would his candidacy be considered historic? It is Mr. Obama and his campaign that is playing the race card and "splicing and dicing" the Democratic Party in this campaign, but no one wants to acknowledge that because then they would be labeled a racist. Give me a break!

I SEE WHY SOME OF YOU HAVE CHOSEN TO BE IDENTIFIED AS "ANONYMOUS". For the record, I believe that the Politically correct term is African American not "Black". The word Black has a very negative ring to it and using it in order to reference someones race is another way to discredit that person. Media spin anyone? Any one want to answer this question? Why is Obama still considered "Black" even though his mother is Caucasian? Unification anyone?

ANY WHO....

Ferraro outright said that Obama is "lucky to be Black" and that "if he were not black, he would not be in this position." If this is not a race card then what is? I don't believe that Obama nor his camp has ever even mentioned race until he was pushed into it by the two race card Queens Hillary and Geraldine. Again, Geralaldine with her "lucky to be black" and "if Obama were a white man" and Hillary with her "hard working americans, white americans" should go ahead and don their WHITE hoods and WHITE robes since they have shown their TRUE COLORS by opening their mouths and inserting their stinky WHITE feet.

Since when has being African American or having a natural tan been "In style?" And what does the color of ones skin have to do with leadership, intelegence and capability? Oh. I get it. These qualities are not ones that are expected to be exibited by an African American. Especially at this level. For the most part, no one disagrees with Sen. Obama. They (haters) just disagree with the fact that he happens to be an intellegent, educated African American male who has been successful at becoming the Democratic front runner in a competition to become the President of the Good Ole (boy) US of A. A HUE-MAN being who was either not expected or not expected to get this far as is evident by the absence of his name on the Michigan ballots. I will say this; Sen. Obama is being supported and encouraged by people such as the Kennedy's and the Eisenhowers and other delegates, super or otherwise, who are surely not ignorant people. This being said, Sen. Obama must have something to contribute or be "up to snuff." If not, why are so many people in this mans corner? STOP INSULTING OUR INTELEGENCE. CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE SHOULD APPLY NO MATTER WHAT RACE THE PERSON HAPPENS TO BE!!! Sen. Obamas success has nothing to do with luck or race. And yes, Senator Obamas success is a confirmation of the fact that it is time for a change which most of us are ready for.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

So, the only people who support Sen. Obama are African American?? You need to wake up and stop trying to justify racist thoughts and behavior. What does being less fortunate have to do with Obama? It is one thing to say you support equality and another to actually do so. Ferraros comments definitly are not about equality. There is no way to explain or excuse these racist comments.
