Henry's Gay-Rights Argument Against Silver

Here's one of Sheldon Silver’s Democratic opponents, Luke Henry, speaking before an endorsement meeting of the Stonewall Democratic Club last week.

In this clip, Henry challenges Silver’s commitment to same-sex marriage because, even as Silver helped it pass in the Assembly, he did little to try to flip the Republican-controlled State Senate, where the issue died.

“If there was a true, true commitment to these issues, we would have seen all his weight and force applied to the State Senate, which has been the obstacle. So that $3 million war chest should have been applied to the State Senate -- to making sure the State Senate was Democratic a long time ago.”

Stonewall voted to endorse Silver for re-election.

Shelly is vengeful. he screwed over a tenants rights group that called him out. stonewall members can't stand shelly, but stonewall had to endorse him, because lets face it, he's going to win. And if stonewall endorses his opponent Luke, shelly will take away all the member item money he currently allows for the Gay & Lesbian Center and other gay non-profits.

1 more reason why we need to get rid of the member item system and find a better way to fund local non-profits.

I'm really hoping for Luke in this election. He's got a lot of fresh ideas and hasn't been tainted with power. He's definitely "the people's" candidate when compared with Silver.

Would it even be legal for Silver to take the $3 million peple contributed for Assembly campaigns and spend it on Senate campaigns?

Personally I think Shelly should pass his leadership on to the next generation, but this argument really doesn't hold water. Shelly cannot and should not be the one leading the charge to change the Senate. That's up to the governor and the Senate minority.

Shelly has carried the water not only for lgbt rights through legislation, but also by funding lgbt health and human services in a big way all through the Pataki years.

That doesn't mean he should remain in the seat until he dies, just that this particular argument is weak.

I have been, and still am, extremly critical about Silver's lack of effort to help Dems take the Senate, it was and continues to be a disgrace. Despite all the bullshit about how the commuter tax was repealed to help the Senate Dems (a lie), Shelly has never helped any Democrat win a marginal Senate seat, ever.

A shonda fur der goyim.

But, in politics one must dance with the one who brung ya. Between SONDA, same-sex marriage and the Community Center, Shelly has delievered large for the gay community, at the risk of alienating some of his strongest supporters.

There ain't much gay men and Orthodox Jews have in common, beyonf Ryan Karben, but the gender of who they dance with is one of them--this tea dance has hot tea in a glass--and everyone is dancing with the one who brung the pastrami home.
