How Biden Avoided the Palin Trap

It's been fashionable to call Joe Biden a "gaffe machine," especially in the run-up to last night's debate, which featured endless suggestions that the Delaware senator would be incapable of restraining himself. But those critics had either ignored Biden's debating history or were oblivious to it, because he has actually been one of the instinctively strongest, most versatile and – yes – self-controlled debaters in politics.

As I wrote a few weeks ago, one parallel between an earlier Biden debate and the challenge he faced against Sarah Palin stood out.  The year was 1972, and Biden was a 29-year-old first-time candidate for the U.S. Senate, challenging 63-year-old Cale Boggs, an institution in Delaware politics. When they debated, Boggs was asked a question about an obscure international treaty. As he fumbled and stammered to produce a coherent response, it became obvious he'd never heard of it. Biden, though, did know about the treaty, and could have jumped in to show it. But he also knew how that would look – the know-it-all-up-start rubbing it in the old man's face. So when it was his turn to speak, all he said was, "Aw, I don't know that one either."

Most politicians wouldn't have been able to resist that – but Biden did. And then there was last night, when Palin challenged Biden's assertions about recent statements from the U.S. commander in Afghanistan by talking about what General "McClellan" actually said. She seemed oblivious to the general's real name: David McKiernan. (She made two separate references to "McClellan.") The caricature of Biden that the media favors would have jumped right in, condescendingly pointed this out, and come across as a boor. Instead, he said nothing, treated her respectfully all night, and won high praise afterwards for his strong, knowledgeable and surprisingly gaffe-free performance.

But it was no surprise to longtime Biden watchers. As the candidate himself said last night: Past is prologue.

Will Obama Answer the 3 a.m. phone calls? (not verified) says:

If ever there was a blatantly “political chamaeleon” --- IT IS JOE BIDEN.

WHAT A HACK!

JOE BIDEN WAS PATHETIC ..... GOVERNOR PALIN WAS FOR REAL.
===================

P.S. Where are all the questions about Obama's readiness to be president? Like the 3 a.m. phone calls?

When Obama won the Dems nomination, he all of a sudden became qualified!

WELL, GOVERNOR PALIN, TOO, WON HER PARTY"S NOMINATION and THAT SHOULD EQUALLY DISMISS ALL QUESTIONS ABOUT HER QUALIFICATIONS !!!

As the political chamaeleon said in the debate "IT IS A MATTER OF FAIRNESS."

Biden's Debate Performance Sucked ! (not verified) says:

JOE BIDEN and I quote his BIG TALKING POINTS in the Debate:

Barack,.. Barack, .. Barack, .. Fundamental Difference, ..

Barack,.. Barack, .. Barack, .. Fundamental Difference, ..

Barack,.. Barack, .. Barack, .. Fundamental Difference, ..

Barack,.. Barack, .. Barack, .. Fundamental Difference, ..

Barack,.. Barack, .. Barack, .. Fundamental Difference, ..

JOE BIDEN WAS PATHETIC.

So let me get this straight, you want your VP to discuss themselves, not the Presidential candidate. Biden was outstanding last night, and most Americans agree. Palin on the other hand, was cute and shallow.

We can go on and on about her "performance", as there is not one sincere bone in her body. However, I will leave it at this...

"Doggone it, there you go again Joe. I will NOT answer the questions you are asking, only the ones they prepared me for!" I am still waiting for her to answer the question about deregulation.

What a dumbass.

Guys, wake up & smell the coffee. Having a person, male or female, that doesn't know the facts, can't remember who's who & is coming into office under a black cloud of scandle, is NOT what America needs. Haven't we had enough yet? It's time to elect someone into office that has better morals, and even though much of the promises are pure political hype we can and should look more carefully into the past behaviors, stances, etc. of our elected officials & not cast the vote just because she's a female or he's of African-American decent. Look at history to see where this kind of voting led us.

Biden kept his mouth shut because Palin caught him in a lie. General McKiernan wants a "sustained commitment", but not necessarily in the same form as the surge in Iraq. Biden tried to make it sound like a real commitment (a la the Surge) would not work in Afghanistan, and I think he didn't believe that Palin was up-to-date on current events and couldn't counter his lie. But she did, and he decided to let the matter drop, rather than pick nits over what the general's name was.

The Democrats should just admit they were wrong about the Surge, and move on.

But wasn't it nice to find out from Joe that the US managed to remove Hezbollah from Lebanon? Nothing like experience; imagine if Palin had said that?

BIDEN --- DUMB OR DUMBER ? (not verified) says:

.
JOE BIDEN MADE A NUMBER OF INACCURATE STATEMENTS, IN LAST NIGHT'S DEBATE, ABOUT JOHN McCAIN'S VOTING RECORD.

--->>> MOST INCREDIBLY --- JOE BIDEN, A LAWYER and CHAIRMAN OF THE SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE --- (a FACT which he and Obama like to flaunt) --- INCORRECTLY STATED WHAT 'ARTICLE 1' OF THE CONSTITUTION IS !!!

ARTICLE 1 ON THE CONSTITUTION DESCRIBES THE ROLE OF THE "EXECUTIVE BRANCH" OF GOVERNMENT --- NOT THE LEGISLATIVE BRANCH AS BIDEN ASSERTED !!!

(THIS WAS DURING HIM LECTURING GOVERNOR PALIN ABOUT THE VICE PRESIDENT'S ROLE UNDER THE CONSTITUTION.)

HOW CAN THE CHAIRMAN OF THE SENATE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE NOT KNOW WHAT ‘ARTICLE 1’ OF THE CONSTITUTION GOVERNS?

LOOK --- FACT CHECK --- JOE BIDEN WAS CONVICTED OF CHEATING & PLAGIARIZING WHILE IN LAW SCHOOL and lying about his grades while a presidential candidate. ... NOW WE KNOW WHY.

1:20 PM: wrong, moron. You are the one who is dumb and dumber

http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.articlei.html

Article 1 is about the legislative branch. always has been, always will be.

Thank you for the lecture, you idiot.

T_LEE_3 (not verified) says:

GOTCHA!!! You said it yourself that Article 1 is about the legislative branch! Well Joe Biden thought it pertained to the executive branch during the debate! Now you can't deny that Joe Biden was wrong. (Just to be clear, I'm not the guy who posted the original comment).

What I want to see in Washington are good, honest people with a common sense approach, and without all of the political entanglements and special interest groups. They need to care about this country more than they care about their personal gain, power, and prestige. We need people who can look at an issue and do what is best, not what is politically correct or what they are coerced into doing by special interest groups. In my book, our best bet to come anywhere near this goal is McCain/Palin. Who cares if an 'experienced' Washington politician has all the Washington rhetoric down pat; that is not a plus.

I will never forget hearing Hillary Clinton say in an interview, after she and Billie began to get involved in all there scandals and nonsense,....."Bill and I did not realize how accountable we would be to the American people." I was stunned when the voters in this country put him back in office.

I have no problem with a female or African-American being president or vice-president. But....it has to be the right woman and the right African-American.........definitely not Hillary and Obama. They are downright frightening, and this country is downright naive. Let's not get all caught up in trying to prove we are not prejudiced and use our heads. Our children and grandchildren are depending on us.
