Dixie & Peter (not verified) says:

SPOILERS! We saw "In Bruges" twice. Can't say enough good about the story or the actors, all of them from Farrell to Renier. Will buy it & watch certain scenes over & over. It is a Medieval morality play with a 21st C. twist. Virgin Mary is a wild loud Innkeeper not afraid to say C-- or to protect her turf. Not that the real VM was a wimp! The father of her child (like G*d) is missing. Colin would be Ralph Roister-Doister (for those of you, who--like me--spent a lovely time in college studying Aulde English literature) if not for the horrific death of that boy, who had written out his "sins" (bad at maths, sad are the tear-jerking ones 2 I recall). The grotesque at the opening--cherub with chip off the forehead reflects this tragic death. The blood on the boy's note and altar is then recalled as Ken wishes to touch the blood of Christ in a cathedral in Bruges. Ray rejects this offering and continues his crazy spiral, up and down. Of course Ken doesn't want Ray to commit suicide, that would send him to Bosch's Hell or Purgatory. Better to kill Ray himself and then make up for it. Ken drop pennies from Heaven & then follows the Bible "No greater Love hath man than this, that he lay down his life for his brother" and to alert Ray of danger, he literally lays his life down on the black cobbled streets of Bruges. Is Bruges really Purgatory? The characters can't leave or won't. Strange film, Bosch, love, revenge. It's The Good the Bad & the Ugly told as only the Irish can tell it. Do laugh, life can be far too short. Do hope, there are always other streets. Don't sell this film short. It's a talented Dwarf with an outrageously big heart.
