The Outerbridge Crossing was named in honor of Eugenius H. Outerbridge, first Chairman of the Port Authority.

The Port Authority tapped John Alexander Waddell, an American engineer with experience designing structures around the world, to design the Outerbridge Crossing and its twin to the north, the Goethals Bridge.
