Bloomberg v. The State

On NY1's Inside City Hall last night, Dominic Carter spoke to Senator Serphin Maltese, a republican, about the recent whisper campaign by Bloomberg aides threatening a challenge to the nine term incumbent.

"The fact of the matter is we are now attempting to work closely with the Mayor and his people to get as much additional funding for the schools as possible," said Maltese, who also admitted that he is not in favor of having a well funded challenger.

No follow up on how much or what type of funding that will be. A recent press release on Maltese's website trumpets his support for education tax credits, in line with the Governor's proposed budget, which sets aside $400 million for the program. But it is not clear that tax credits are the main source of funding Bloomberg is after.

The governor's budget includes an additional $634 million in education funding this year, bringing the total aid package to $17 billion, but the mayor has called on him to use an additional $2 billion surplus towards funding New York City schools.

An aside, Maltese will host Rep. Peter King tonight at the Queens County Republican Party Annual Gala in Howard Beach.

Addabbo is not running. Everyone wake up. His consultant (Scott Levenson) went out and got some free press FOR HIMSELF. The last time that happpened, Levenson had a press conference with Vinnie Gentile ANNOUNCING to the press that the rumours regarding his sexual harrassment issues were true. Brilliant. This was done because his consultants thought it would be a good idea to generate press for themselves and be quoted in a "crisis situation."

Mayor Blowhard Bloomberg is out there blasting everyone on CFE. For the past four years he gave Pataki and Bruno a complete free pass and supported them financialy too. Now he is trying to blame Silver, who's the only guy to seek funding for City schools. Excuse me while I puke.

I saw Maltese on NY1 last night and I thought it was one of his best performance's ever. He hasn't been very impressive for many years but last night he explained how misguided the Mayor and his people are in an affable and logical way while still being respectful to the mayor.

4:02 is absolutely correct about Levenson. A self promoting empty suit that should thank the council every day for campaign finance. When will the press do a story on how the taxpayers lined the pockets of incompetants like Levenson.

Tom, Vito and Jose (not verified) says:

Bloomberg took over the schools (2 of us gave hime our votes) and he went on to hire himself a whole bunch of high priced "yes" people at the Dept. of Education and got rid of our grass roots neighborhood hard workers. He will pay a price. And meanwhile the schools have not markedly improved no matter what statistics he and "Lil Joe" Klein come up with.

Education tax credits are definitely not the main source of education funding bloomberg is after. in fact, the mayor has said barely a word about them.

hmm... (not verified) says:

Didn't see the show. However, the logic in targeting a Republican, who can actually get something done in the Senate is odd...

hmm... (not verified) says:

Hey Cowboy,
The mayor has said positive things about education tax credits. How can he not? The biggest beneficiaries of the $500 per child tax credit are parents of public school children in New York.

bloggedOut (not verified) says:

The mayor actually said that he would supports the edcuation tax credit. That makes sense, because they have a great impact on minority families in NYC. However, the mayor wants more than just some money for his neediest constituents. He needs more $ to build those new schools. So while he's supportive of the tax credits, that's chump change compared to the big money that he is after.

4:41 You must be a pretty astute observer of humour if you are mentioning Levenson and the CFB in the same sentence. There are about a dozen failed Council candidates who have been fined tens of thousands of dollars because Levenson messed up their CFB filings. Aurthur Cheliotes, who is a great labor leader, has had to tell the labor movement that he may have to mortagage his house to pay off the fines from his failed campaign two years ago. Levenson achieved a rare form of infamy when he sued the CFB and attacked them viciously in the press. The CFB ended up holding him responsible for a piece of the clients penalties. Joe Addabbo seems like a fairly smart guy and won't fall for any tricks and but his career in jeopardy.

The mayor is right to threaten Maltese: he's the one with the power to make it happen. Education Tax Credits are great. However, the real money is CFE. I'll take tax credits for NYC because the suburbs are getting STAR relief. The real debate here is CFE.

Every Queens Republican (not verified) says:

Maltese has done LESS than Bloomberg in party-building in Queens, and Bloomberg is as fake a republican as they come.

Maltese is frightened of a challenger, but I think the Mayor would be doing NYC right by helping someone challenege Maltese and shake up his status-quo. He's corrupt and--worse--comfortable. No elected official, especially those as head of his county party, should be comfortable.

as if we need any reminders... but the recent happenings in the NYC Council should remind us that you don't even get to play in this sandbox unless someone 'corrupt' gives you the nod... So if that's what you mean, ok. But calling Maltese corrupt is a bit much. Especially if you're doing it in comaparison to Upstate Joe, South of Canal Shelly, and FU Bloomie... C'mon.

Serph brings it home for his district & city... and he's not about to grab the ankles for a Mayor who cares only about making NYC great for real estate.

Mayor doesn't care about kids... CFE aside, he's gutting every facet of the City that helps kids rise up... arts, culture, after-school, etc... if it's not tied to a stadium or a gentrification, the Mayor of NYC, Inc. can't be bothered.

Ben,

As you may or not be aware, it seems that Serf has been sleeping with the enemy for many years. Using the Democratic organization to seek revenge against those that would oppose him and his cronies. Its no wonder that Serf, Ognibene ( when in favor) and Dennis Gallagher have had pretty much of a free ride ever since Serfs gang rested control of the party from the Werner people at the end of the "Fran and Indian Wars".

Those that challenge their authority are treated much more harshly than those who just ran as opposition. Including incouraging primaries and opposing candidates against encumbants not in their fold, to outright attacks on their ethics and morality. Once your veiwpoint is removed from the fighting, the actions taken, at the level in which they are taken seem to be excessive over-reaction by a group of misguided and sometime misanthropic underdeveloped adults in name only.

I wish on Serf the same things that Serf has wished on me, except with much more intestinal gas, to produce embarassing moments in public and private venues. This of course is in my opinion only, and not a true statement of fact, though it would be interesting to be a fly on the wall at some of Serf's private meetings, and planning sessions, I am not sure if any real benefit would derive from those observations.

As to the actual effects that Serf has meted out to his constituancy, I should say that the sports operation at CKHS far outweighs it's regional job as the benefactor of members of Serf's political entourage by providing employment for the families and staff members of his various political entities. After all, they did save the school from obliteration, produced some of the finest athletes in the land, and served the community well as a regional high school provided education and a future for many of the areas youth, and all of this could have been done without Serf's being head of either the Republican, or the Conservative Parties, or an elected state official.

enough about levenson. it is time for evan and his partners to give it up. the only thing he and his firm are guilty of are actually caring about their clients. the rest of the consultant crew take their money and dump on them. to the comment about filings, if you cared to look you would find that the advance group was responsible for the filings on arthur cheliotes, not the others. the attack on arthur is an attack on labor clients. see anabel palma, melissa mark viverito, etc.

Serf's event tonight was very well-attended, and the star was Randy Daniels. Speaking for 20 minutes, Daniels delivered an uproarious address about core Republican principles. He received a standing ovation.

John Faso spoke for 2 minutes, stole one of Daniels' lines, and managed to lie about being from Queens (He was born on Long Island). But many Republicans in the room continued support for Faso, including Conservative Michael Long.

William Weld spoke next and nearly put the entire crowd to sleep. His attacks on Eliot Spitzer were 100% accurate, but he needs to find a better way to express himself.

Pat Manning did not show up, unfortunately. John Spencer and Jeanine Pirro also spoke, Spencer receiving Serph's endorsement just minutes before the event.

Perhaps as many as 250 people showed up.

Not to pile on, but there are so many good things to have against Scott Levenson on top of his bought it in a store front tan.

His campaign group has been known to rake in tens of thousands in fees from Council candidates who were decently funded, and then manage not to get them into the mail until its too little and too late. [I'd name names but then he would know who I am, and that would kill the fun, wouldn' it.]
He has openly lied to some of his clients in an effort to help other clients.
Mark Green put him on the map, and yet, Mark Green wouldn't piss on him now if her were on fire.
Cheliotis aside, he has left several other candidates in CFB straits.
Is that a good start for the what have you got against Scott Levenson question?
Oh....and he is the least entertaining talking head on the consultants corner on NY1. Ah, ok, that's just an opinion. Unfortunately the other things are facts.
