Maloney's Endorsement

Gay City News has a piece about the ESPA endorsement of Sean Patrick Maloney last night. In it, ESPA Executive Director, Alan Van Capelle, has this to say about the other Democratic candidates in the race for AG:
"This primary is an embarrassment of riches," Van Capelle told Gay City News. "For each one of the six candidates, I could name at least two things they've done for the LGBT community. Each of them has publicly stated support for same-sex marriage and that's amazing."

Van Capelle is against giving $$ to Hillary. Does Maloney also believe that?

The ESPA endorsing Maloney is like a italian group endorsing Cuomo, or like Jesse Jackson endorsing a fellow black like Charlie King.

.... what NON-GAY endorsements has Maloney received

Alan Van Capelle is a mench. Even if you don't agree with this endorsement. He stood up to Emily Griske on this endorsement and had made ESPA independent of this high paid lobbyist. Griske's self serving operation no longer exists with ESPA. Well done Alan.

An endorsement of Maloney is a throwaway but it is a good enough way to avoid deciding between the likely winner (Cuomo) and the sentimental favorite (Green) in parts of the LGBT community. As such it makes sense.

ESPA has come a long way since endorsing Pataki. That said, they need to learn to work with other LGBT orgs and pols. AVC is a good speaker and has raised ESPA's profile, but has made them abrasive in their quest to be queen queer of them all in NYS.

1:56 I disagree with you about working with the gay pols. Gay pols worry about themselves and lobbyists, see 12:28 above. ESPA should remain independent and do what is best for the community. They must remain out of the "pay for play" system in Albany and City Hall. Our gay pols have been corrupted by the system and lobbyists.

Has Charlie King received the endorsement of any black group of comparable heft? Has Andrew received one from Italians? Is there a state women's group like this behind Denise? (Spare me the Emily's list thing; they can't do shit in NY). Nuf said.

Pride Agenda has 50,000 plus active members in New York. Maloney is consolidating a very significant base and has avoided the Brian Ellner, Margartia Lopez, Patrick Murphy problem of having no big gay orgs behind him. (He got Victory Fund too.) Any way you slice it, it's a big building block for him. Means money, ground troops, staff. And means he'll be on the ballot.

Homo, not a Cuomo, oh yeah, like they helped Gifford Miller and then Fernando Ferrer. Neither even carried the Village or Chelsea. They are a big yawn. You must work for Maloney.

Ground troops? Are you joking? ESPA doesn't have any ground troops.

50,000 plus active members in New York? Come on. That is a joke, active members, ha! 50,000 ha!

I'm sending a check to ESPA. Not becasue they endorsed Maloney but because they have taken on the self proclaimed power brokers by standing up to Hillary Clinton and now, again, not putting up with Emily Giske's threats demanding support for Cuomo. Alan Van Capelle has a base and is listened to. Giske doesn't and isn't. Bravo.
