Dobbs Likes Maloney

Grumpy Lou Dobbs dislikes plenty of people, but apparently Carolyn Maloney isn't one of them. A Maloney aide brought to our attention the following exchange on Dobbs' CNN program Tuesday night about the use of Venezuelan-produced Smartmatic voting machines in American elections. (Maloney has urged caution about the machines and pressed the issue in Congress.)

Lou Dobbs: ...I think we have to give just extraordinary credit to Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney. She focused on this issue, she brought it to the attention of the public, and our hats are off to her. She's just doing a wonderful job here.

Kitty Pilgrim: She's been very vigilant, and until this came to light publicly, there was really no -- absolutely no acknowledgment that there was a problem with this.

Lou Dobbs: It is nice to see our elected officials, when it does... rarely happen, doing their job, and again, our compliments and commendation to Congresswoman Maloney.

East Side Old-Timer (not verified) says:

Maloney is a terrific member of Congress, and I am proud to have her represent me. She is ferociously hard-working, diligent, and tenacious when she gets her teeth into an issue like passing the 9-11 Commission legislation. Beware to those who underestimate her!

Impressed Elephant (not verified) says:

It is insane that we would be allowing foreign-made electronic voting machines --that leave no paper trail -- to be used in conducting American elections without any U.S. government review whatsoever. I may not always agree with Maloney on everything, but good for her!

ConcernedEastSideVoter (not verified) says:

Congresswoman Maloney hit the nail on the head on this one. How is it possible that a group of Venezuelans with past financial ties to the anti-American Venezuelan government be allowed to buy a major voting machine manufacturer without anybody in the federal government even looking? Maybe there ultimately is no threat, but that nobody was looking is rediculous.

Awe-struck East Sider (not verified) says:

Carolyn has always been a great Congresswoman. She's right on the issues and not afraid to stick it to the Bush administration. She's even getting us that 2nd Avenue subway... someday. Kudos to Carolyn- Lou Dobbs really does hate pretty much everyone.

As a Republican I was sad when Carolyn beat BIll Green. However, over the years I have grown to like, and even adore Carolyn. Needless to say, I still vote Republican in Presidential and Senatorial Races, however when it comes to Maloney I am a huge supporter. She has stood strongly for the 14th District and has been a passionate leader. She continously stands for Womens rights and 9-11 funding, and now maybe she will even clean up our voting system. Hopefully, she keeps u the great work.

nice to see that Carolyn's staffers are hard at work here.

Count me as one who is disappointed that Chavez' people don't own the voting machines. I much prefer and trust him to the Republican gazzilionaires who now control that "industry".

Diebold if you do, Diebold if you don't!

Mark Epstein (not verified) says:

About time a member of congress is taking a look at the whole diebold scandal. Hopefully Carolyn can get a solid crew together to figure out this debacle.

Nicolo Macchiavelli (not verified) says:

Yeah, Mark, hopefully she will avoid sneering at democratically elected leaders of pretty important countries because of their alleged "anti-Americanism". Gee, where would that have come from. Could it have been the unrelenting CIA conspiring to overthrow his government with a military golp on the payroll of the oil companies. And, if a Western Hemisphere election were held tomorrow, Chavez would probably win. Certainly he would get more votes than Bush.

Gatemouth (not verified) says:

When Carolyn really cares about an issue, she has the unique ability to focus upon it like a laser. On poltical process issues, Carolyn exceeds her apparent ability. Good for her.

Maloney's No Baloney (not verified) says:

As usual, Gatemouth is dead-on, even if underestimates Congresswoman Maloney's "apparent" and considerable abilities. From my outdated "Almanac of American Politics" entry on Carolyn Maloney: "in the House... she stayed to make a serious contribution... (when) she found a cause... she became 'a pit bull'." Sic those fangs on Smartmatic, girl!

25 years ago i called her a pit bull on issues. Glad to see the fight has with her!

ConcernedEastSideVoter (not verified) says:

Congresswoman Maloney will gain allies on this Smartmatic issue from the Right. I doubt Republicans want Hugo Chavez to have even the tiniest influence in U.S. politics. Venezuela has already demonstrated an interest in influencing U.S. politics by providing cut-rate oil to poor communities which are represented by Chavez-sympathetic politicians. And his government has spent millions of dollars lobbying in Washington, with its Venezuela Information Office. Why would Chavez or some other foreign power hostile to the U.S. not exploit a well-known weak link in the U.S. democratic process--electronic voting machines? That nobody was paying attention to this development is incredible, as Lou Dobbs (no leftist) commented. Congresswoman Maloney's specialty of late has been to find issues that embarass Bush but where there is also common ground with Republicans. Dubai Ports World was a perfect example, and this could be the sequel.

UpperUpperEastSider (not verified) says:

The same logic applies to USA owned businesses elsewhere. They just can't be trusted. Just like efforts to export American "democracy." What idiots. Baloney.
