Bronx Assemblyman Peter Rivera is going after U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia for his decision to announce more charges against Bronx state Senator Efrain Gonzalez, Jr. today -- just as lawmakers were getting back to Albany to vote on their pay raises.
Rivera, who is the chair of the New York State Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force, told me, "I don't understand the logic why he would pick the day we're in session to re-indict an individual again, when we're in session. Allegedly, and this is something I learned from the media, allegedly we're up here doing pay raises. Is the point to discuss, when the coverage is going to be 'pay raise' or 'no pay raise,' a member of the legislature gets indicted?

Peter Rivera is an embarassment to his district. The man has been in office for 107 years and has used his name recognition to get elective jobs for his children, and this is the best his mind can come up with?
Like Mike Garcia and the arresting agents knew or cared what the Senate was going to be doing in Albany when they planned the unsealing of this indictment and the arrests of three more defendants. Assemblyman Rivera seems to think that after a grand jury indicts someone, the feds should wait to bring the charges until a day where the press for the State Senante might not be bad.

First, Peter Rivera is not related to Jose Rivera, the Bronx Chairman (and Assemblymember), nor Jose's two children, City Councilmember Joel Rivera and Assemblymember Naomi Rivera. Second, he's not been in office that long, though he's been somewhat lower profile than other NYC members until the past few years.
Lay off Ellen Young - she's a good person and will do well in Albany. Personal invective won't overturn an election result.
