Oh No! I'm a Self-Hating Jew!?! Mom, Tell Me They're Lying!

Yesterday when I asked Brandeis troublemaker Lior Halperin whether she was Jewish, she said, "Yes. I'm what people call a self-hating Jew." I said, "I love you, Lior. Me too."

I'm not a good Jew. I'm probably a bad Jew. I don't go to shul, don't believe in the Old Testament God, married a Christian, (would have) raised my (nonexistent) kids Buddhist/nothing, and have tons of impure thoughts. Didn't serve in the Israeli Army like Lior. But it's my politics in particular that make me fishy. And truthfully, various good intelligent estimable highminded Jews say I'm a self-hating Jew; and maybe they know, and therefore maybe I am, and maybe I shouldn't fight it. So, O.K., like, let's move on, and in between crawling out from under my rock, and back to it, can I express my opinion?

This to me is one of the revelations of the Mearsheimer-Walt paper on the Israel lobby. These two profs in their 50s knew they'd get called anti-semites if they said what they believed, but they decided to go ahead and say it anyway. They didn't care. They accepted the label, as the price of saying something important. Dershowitz says they destroyed their professional reputations by saying that, and Grant Smith (of the Institute for Research: Middle Eastern Policy) says Dershowitz is right, they did destroy their reputations, in certain quarters. But not in others.

Did you really need all those words to say so little ?
Get a real job - the life will follow.

Why not just call youself a "Jew-hater" and join the others in your crowd...Maybe you just hate yourself...Who else do you hate?

Alan Dershowitz is a showman, and he's increasingly embattled, since he tried to get the gov. of California to prevent the publication of Norman Finkelstein's book. He's the past not the future of Jewish Americans in academia on the question of Israeli policy and more importantly on the question of whether it's anti-Semitic to criticize that policy.

IRmep (not verified) says:

Actually, the academic survey about Mearsheimer Walt is a bit more complex. Also, Grant Smith doesn't really agree with Dershowitz about anything, except that plagiarism is bad.

A thinly veiled anti-Israel website (above):
"IRmep Middle East research does not derive primarily from groups and individuals and sources promoting hidden agendas. IRmep base support comes from the donations of concerned individuals who are alarmed by the current direction and authors of U.S. policies. IRmep also derives corporate support from U.S. industries that have faced tremendous challenges developing their Middle East consumer and enterprise markets in the current policy environment."

The Arab world provides only oil and problems. Israel delivers Nobel Prize winners and advancements in technology (computer chips, software, biotech, solar, pharmaceutical and agriculture). Which side is in the US's best interests???

IRmep (not verified) says:

The Arab world gave the world the foundations of modern medicine and astronomy.

Also, most "Middle East Think Tanks" like WINEP are little more than social clubs for powerful zionists. A review of Winep's board reveals a who's who of Israel activists, in spite of the neutral sounding name. Check it out:

I hear IRmep doesn't accept Zio or Military dollars, which makes one wonder how they survive in this space or pay their bills.

Those advances were 1000 years ago. They also got along well with the Jew's back then. There are many business, academic and technology reasons why Israel is a strategic ally of the U.S.

The Arab world does not serve the U.S.'s interests, except for oil.

The Pentium processor was designed and is manufactured in Israel. The is an example of why companies like Google, Intel, IBM, Microsoft, Boeing -which all have operations in Israel- support a strong Israel. Lobbying for Israel supports U.S. business interests

A self-loathing Jew finds pleasure in anything that denigrates the Jewish people. They would make a great Christian during the middle-ages, or a great Muslim today.

In the eyes of a self-loather, Jews can do nothing right. The pproblem is that a self-loather would make a great Antisemite but they don't have the guts to abandon Judaism officially.

When I see an open grave near a Death Camp, I cry. All of those dead are my relatives, men, women and children, whose only crime was being born Jewish.

You look at the same open grave and wonder why they didn't make it deeper!

I think being called a "self-hating" Jew today is rather a compliment in light of the fact that any Jew who dares criticize Israel, its racist laws and policies and apartheid practices is usually labeled as such.

If standng up for human rights and equality means being a "self-hating" Jew...then be proud of it whoever you are and wherever you are...all you wonderful "self-hating" Jews.

Are you a self-hating American Christian Marlene?

10 million blacks were killed in the slave trade

12 millions of Indians were killed

Keep on burying your self-rightous head in the sand and blame all of the civilians being killed in YOUR NAME MARLENE in Iraq on the Jews and Republicans.

Does jewish internet reply posting operate coherently ? That is within any given comment on jews, in any given forum or blog there appears a rapid cluster of desperate inadequate replies that seem almost as if there were email networking. Either that or there are a lot of jews out there who spend a lot of time going round the internet replying to this kind of stuff.

The replies are never convincing. My take from the inside is that the jewish community are feeling pretty sheepish and up against it. It's been the pattern throughout history that a few jews have handed down suffering a confused and bewildered community that don't really know what to do but revert to the their self feeback victim programming.

BlueThunder613 (not verified) says:

A self-hating Jew is one that avoids anything Jewish or traditional Jewish thought and practice. The outcomes of this are more terrorism, anti-semitism, increasing membership in alternative religions, marrying outside of Judaism, succumbing to missionary groups, etc. It's a real shonda when families refuse to have anything to do with their children who marry outside the faith, when they have eschewed virtually everything Jewish (like some of my relatives did) other than bagels, lox, and cream cheese and observance to some degree of the major holidays of Pesach and High Holy Days and even some who only celebrate Chanukah, because Christmas is so popular outside of Israel. Instead of sitting shiva, be more Jewish (lead by example), keep the mitzvahs of Kashrus and Shabbos, and at least one more Mitzvah. Also, visit Eretz Israel with your families, if you can afford to go.
