The New Yorker Uses the G-Word
That said, I question the casual use, twice, of the word "goyim," without ital, without quotation marks, to refer to non-Jews. In a piece that shows some sensitivity on the issue of Christians' misunderstanding of Jews (they say we're not forgiving, and that's antisemitic), the use of "goyim" evinces a lack of understanding by Jews of their own situation. The word means "the nation," the gentile world, and has a dash of Boratish wariness and hostility. It is Yiddish, and is not like shlep or chutzpah, that is, an assimilated neutral word. It's a signal to other Jews, Let's talk as landsmen. I think it's arrogant and exclusionary. Jews have large cultural power in America; acting as if we're still some persecuted subgroup is way way beneath us. I gather from one gentile friend that he has friends who feel themselves to be outside the cultural establishment and have appropriated the word "goyim" to refer to themselves, in something of the proud/resentful way that blacks took on the n-word. I know, the cultural valences aren't the same. But it's loaded—why make half your audience feel excluded?

Ok, at the risk of sounding repetious let me make my point again. For a guy who is not only assimilated but totally rejects his heritage and is also an avowed enemy of the worlds only Jewish state has opposed to the multiple countries that are strictly for Moslems in a way that Israel is not and will never be strictly for Jews. Excuse Phil for this current release of verbal diarrhea. If he knew what he was talking about, he wouldn't have this "pseudo-job" here at The Observer. He finds any excuse to bash Israel and the Jewsih people, it's kind of his niche here at The Observer. It's been a while since The Observer has given him an actual writing assignment, but he'll have a 'real' piece in the paper soon, since they like his hybrid journalism-fiction..
It's been a tough time for him lately. After a few decent journalism assignments over a decade ago, and two disastrous books, one which was painfully reviewed in the New York Times:
"The writing is bizarre and strange, disjointed, rambling, nonsensical much of the time. ... Some cognitive problem? We are told this was written by a journalist,an editor no less, yet over and over as I read I kept asking myself: what? when? who? huh? where? huh?"
... padded with repetitions, nonevents, paragraphs full of sawdust, marginal details, purplish flights of fancy...." and in a few other terribly embarrassing reviews which he hates to even think about, his writing career tanked.

Then, he hit a major identity/midlife/professional crisis.
Since he didn't want to blame himself for my lame situation he decided to blame himself and his culture. This sort of assuaged any responsibility for the mediocrity that his personal and professional life had fallen to.
The result is this provocative, edgy blog. He's stuck to my "rambling, nonsensical" style and gets things wrong a lot of the time, but sticks to my theme which digs at his family and culture, because he blame them for his lame personal/professional life.
He has created a new journalistic method called "code". When something doesn't fit his self-hating ideology, he interprets the "code" that the person is speaking to fit what he wants them to say. It's kind of like making things up, but more in keeping with my "strange, disjointed, rambling, nonsensical" style. Neat, huh?
Hopefully, when this is all over the Observer will be thoroughly embarrassed, but at least they'll get some credit for having gotten rid of him. Then, he can blame them for everything, too.
He's really happy that a lot of people post comments. It makes him feel like his career is resuscitating a little bit.

This is the classic cheap propaganda technique of the uninformed to present others as "appeasers", even though reading WWII history and current debates among historians would have informed them (G-g forbid!) that this view of Chamberlain is discredited for too many reasons to list here. But of course cheap propaganda relies on being misinformed and to address the misinformed. You won't find such people here (except of course in the likes of the bigots who don't seem to study anything seriously).

1) Even if Israel were not an apartheid state (which it is), your love for Lieberman who wants an "ethnically clean" Israel by ethnic-cleansing should stop the brainwashed from using the term "democracy" anymore since their preference is alien to what democracy stands for.
2) Applying the same standards, maybe we should be looking forward to an American Lieberman to create an ethnically clean US for WASPs! The reasoned responses in here are a breath of fresh air. I've been banned from numerous pro-Zionist blogs and forums merely for stating facts that are contrary to the popular narrative on Israel. The fanatics and hot-heads that remain tend to break most all the forum agreements, but in the service of Zionism are overlooked. I have deep admiration for truth-tellers and that the Jewish ones have to put up with so much abuse is shameful. The campus Hasbara manual promotes similar propaganda techniques that were written of in "Mein Kampf". The most prominent of these are attack and smear. If your case had any merit, you wouldn't have to resort to such subterfuge to try to make it.
I found this piece just today when posting it to a Martin Lewis piece at Huffington Post as he takes Michael Richards to task for his insensitivity.

My understanding of the Talmud is that goy, shiksa and shaggetz? all refer to lower forms of life as well as non-jews. These lower forms of life include insects and unclean cattle. I have heard this translation from Jews multiple times. So to all the defenders out there I say lampshade- my favorite, shyster, Jesus Killer, and hooknose.
When you use words that refer to us as less than human and threaten us on top of it- you can count on another holocaust.Of course what I have said here is hate speech to you. What you have said here is such a little thing darling!
