Clinton Supporter Says License Mess Is Hillary's Fault, Not Eliot's

Ruben Diaz, Jr., an Assemblyman from the Bronx, supports Hillary Clinton. He also opposes Eliot Spitzer’s latest driver’s license policy.

But when it comes to blaming someone for Clinton’s awkward answers during the debate on this issue, Diaz says Spitzer is catching a bad rap.

 Diaz told me just now:

“Let’s not blame Spitzer for Hillary Clinton’s woes on the DMV issue. You got to blame who you need to blame, and that’s Hillary Clinton. She’s the one who wants to, you know, dilly dallied on the issue. She should have a position on this. She should have a definitive position on this issue. So, if somebody is taking shots at Hillary because she didn’t answer the question appropriately, that’s not Spitzer’s fault.”

Buying Ballots

In today's money-game news:

A small vault's worth of deep-pocketed donors will gather at the Manhattan home of George Soros this Wednesday to throw some serious cash towards the campaign of attorney Judy Aydelott. Aydelott is running for congress in the 19th District (i.e, the Hudson Valley 's "country house" region) against six-term incumbent Sue Kelly. Among the hosts of the $1000-$2100 event? Jayni and Chevy Chase, Stanley Tucci, Gloria Steinem, Ambassador Robin Duke, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Greg Sargent reports that in 2005 the Democrats outraised Republicans on Wall Street for the first time since 1994, thanks in part to the combined, one-two Hillary-Schumer fund-raising punch.

In other Hillary news, the Daily News reported this weekend that the senator has been renting out her donor list as a way to squeeze every last penny from her fund-raising base. While this strikes us as a little bit money-grubbing, to be sure, did any donors really think these people dind't sell their names?

And John Kerry continues to pursue the impossible, or at least the improbable: in the hopes of currying favor with Democratic candidates, party committees, and other groups that might be helpful to a presidential bid, he has doled out more dollars to these groups than any other 2008 hopeful, according to Roll Call (subscription only) and Political Wire.

Andrew For Mayor?

See Andrew Cuomo: a famous name, a cabinet-level resume, a million bucks in his campaign account, and -- for all his much-noted flaws -- a serious political talent.

But if Robert F. Kennedy Jr. enters the race for State Attorney General, it's hard to see how Cuomo can compete. Cuomo's name isn't as big. His resume isn't as perfectly suited for the job. And the money hardly matters.

Chatter this morning has led us in a different direction: The field of Democratic Mayoral candidates is weaker than once thought, with Bill Thompson's withdrawal. Anthony Weiner's unexpected strength demonstrates the opening for a candidate who shares Anthony's profile, but is much better known.

Andrew just has to move to Queens, quick.
