Strolling in the Aftermath

Time to hit the blogs:

Bloomberg's voters were wildly outnumbered... by registered voters who didn't cast ballots, laments Andrew Friedman at DMIBlog.

Doug Forrester, the failed Republican candidate for New Jersey governor, blames his defeat on Bush. But over at the New York Young Republican Record, Rick Brownell doesn't buy it. Forrester's finger-pointing, says the blogger, is "infantile." Or at least, um... unoriginal.

In a post titled "NYC Drifts Right...Upstate Drifts Left?" the Daily Gotham suggests that state Dems have showed up the local party. Urban Elephants grabs the first part of the deadline, trumpets with glee.

The secretive scribes of Backroom Deal Breaker look forward to the Speaker's Debate on Wednesday, demand more public participation, offer a can of whoop ass.

Eliot Spitzer surfaced on Comedy Central, where Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report asked him how much it takes to run a gubernatorial campaign these days. "Probably 30, 40 million dollars," Eliot estimated. "It is almost an obscene amount of money...The reason it's not completely obscene is I'm about to do it, so I don't want to say it's obscene," he added with a laugh.

Yes, this last item was not so bloggy, and the show aired a week ago. But it's funny enough to merit a look and a link.

Doggerel for Forrester

Um. Is this some kind of joke?

Doug Forrester's campaign Web site has a prominent link to A Lyrical Tribute to Doug, which turns out to be an extraordinarily bad poem by one Habibullah Saleem.

It's also a very long poem, so I've edited out the slower parts. But really, read it all:

The price for Governor is loyalty and trust
The price for Governor is the absence of lust
Thoroughly qualified Doug Forrester for sure
Bringing to the voters the requirements for cure...

Down to Earth whether Black or White
Doug Forrester as Governor an amazing delight
With nothing to hide devoted and clean
Vote for Doug Forrester and not some scheme
Understanding New Jersey is to be alert
For health and economics he's willing to work
Putting in place collective education
Inclusive strategies with appropriate inspiration
A family man with righteous support
Unauthorized characters we must abort...

Knows how to provide and care for our elders
Forrester's character is that of a welder...

Really. Read it all.

If you've been following the madness in Jersey (or at least reading the NYT metro section, you're familiar with the unprecedented, escalating arms race of attack ads between gubernatorial candidates Doug Forrester and Jon Corzine.

Hoping for a last minute infusion of elevated dialogue? Don't hold your breath. You can watch the new Forrester commerical, which is pathbreakingly personal and bare-knuckled, here.

Even the wonks over at PoliticsNJ, who've weathered decades of Garden State shenanigans with placid insight, are reeling:

"The spot represents a strategic roll of the dice for Forrester. It could produce a poll-shifting payoff, just as it might stir a backlash that would bury him for good. But with his other options exhausted and the clock ticking, he may not have all that much to lose.

"'We've never had an ad this personal in a New Jersey campaign,' said Ingrid Reed of Rutgers University's Eagleton Institute. 'I don't think the Forrester campaign had time to focus group-test it. I have no idea how this will play out.'"

Corzine's televised reply accuses Forrester of using a Bush-Rove smear tactic (strategy sound familiar?) and relying on "the politics of personal destruction."
