Miz-Life Crisis

“Today I was talking about my favorite look, especially right this minute,” said Isaac Mizrahi, the new designer for Liz Claiborne, on Tuesday, July 15. “If I was so thin, I would wear only oversized men’s clothes with the shirts all buttoned up, and a big belt, you know? And big pleated pants, maybe a little short … with some kind of flat, probably, or if I was a girl, some giant shoe. This is what I would wear, with little round glasses or something. And I can’t wear that. I’m too fat for, like, a belt. I can’t wear an ironic cinched belt, I can’t! I’m too fat. read more »

Higher-End New York Retailers: Us Worry?

Despite the truckloads of statistics floating around lately indicating that U.S. consumer confidence is plummeting (not to mention the millions of tax rebate checks in the mail), the city’s retailers seem convinced that New Yorkers will continue to shop, recession or not.

Monday brought a flood of new retail news, some of it reflective of the economic slump and some less so. read more »

Brooklyn, The Borough: On Target

One of the major differences, generally speaking, between Manhattan and Brooklyn is the proximity you have to your neighbor. In Manhattan, residents may feel piled on top of each other in shoeboxes or filing cabinets, depending on your metaphor preference, but rarely will they ever get to know one another. In Brooklyn, residents tend to have more space and fewer neighbors, yet the proximity seems closer.

Brooklynites exist closer to the urban frontier. read more »
