The Morning Read: Friday, February 9, 2007

Federal officials said that the mayor's sting operation on out-of-state gun dealers may have broken the law. More records were sought in the federal probe into Joe Bruno.

Newsday describes Eliot Spitzer's fight with the legislature as "war."

Spitzer, opting for a boxing metaphor, told donors he'll win the next round.

Spitzer told the New York Times, "It is now clear who is genuinely for reform and who is not."

Not unrelatedly, legislative leaders discontinued discussions with the governor's aides about three major policy proposals.

But one upstate Democratic Assemblyman confirmed he's spoken with Spitzer's people about joining the administration.

A state Senator from the Bronx accused of stealing $423,000 in state funds told the court he's broke.

Former state comptroller Alan Hevesi will pay an additional $5,000 fine.

The lobbying watchdog who went after legislative leaders wants to lead the state's new ethics agency.

Andrew Cuomo said the state is preparing to sue Exxon Mobil over an old oil spill near the Brooklyn-Queens border.

Three recent polls in battleground states show Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani leading their parties in 2008.

Hillary said Terry McAuliffe may be the best speaker "in the universe."

And Barack Obama said he doesn't want to focus on race during his campaign.

Pirro Attacks Hillary, Mateo Attacks Pataki

The only camera at Jeanine Pirro's press conference just now was wielded by the Democrats' tracker, and The Politicker was joined by just one other print reporter, a Post GA, in the sun in front of a Mobil station on 42nd and 11th.

Still, Jeanine put a cheerful face on her fifth attempt to draw attention to Hillary's failure to press (Republican) congressional leaders to cut the gas tax.

"I disagree with Tom DeLay," Pirro said, standing with taxi advocate (and Bloomberg aide) Fernando Mateo.

After the event concluded and Pirro walked north with Governor Pataki's former communications director, Mike McKeon, however, the message seemed to stray a bit.

Mateo, who had introduced Pirro, stayed behind to chat, saying Hillary isn't the only official at fault:

"The Governor hasn't done shit either," he said. "We need to get him to get off his ass and do something."  read more »
