Electeds To Tishman: Set Eviction Rules at Stuy Town, Cooper Village
On Tuesday afternoon, City Councilman Dan Garodnick called on Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village landlord Tishman Speyer to pay the legal fees of tenants who are proven to be legitimately occupying rent-stabilized apartments in the complex after contesting non-lease renewal notices from the landlord.
Under the proposal, which was endorsed by Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and State Senator Tom Duane at a press conference, Tishman would also agree to a set of ground rules for attempting to evict tenants for allegedly breaking rent-stabilization rules.
“Over the last two years, we have seen an aggressive pursuit of tenants by Tishman Speyer, claiming that people are not using their apartments as their primary residence,” Mr. read more »
Stuy Town: It Depends On What Your Definition of Is Is
From the New York Post this morning:
To attract new residents, the complex is adding 200,000 plants, 10,000 trees and has put in a fancy new gym. Pets, which were once a huge no-no, are now everywhere. And the complex is offering more free movie nights, cocktail mixers, sports leagues and outdoor events. read more »
You Will Love This Blog
Curbed alerted us to a new satirical blog "Stuy Town's Lux Living" written by a resident of the rent-stabilized housing complex as it makes its transition to fully market-rate. Though Stuy Town's new landlord Tishman Speyer is never mentioned by name, the blog does a good job of taking the developer to task with sardonic, over-the-top posts about the gentrification process.
Our favorite post from May 3, "Illegal Immigrants? No way Jose," details the Stuyvesant Town management's effort to keep undocumented foreigners from "raiding the complex" with an "elaborately cloaked, rusty chain link fence." read more »

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh, Councilman Dan Garodnick, and assorted community groups are hosting a town hall meeting on Thursday evening to discuss the issues facing Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village residents.
The non-renewal notices from landlord Tishman Speyer that are allegedly flooding the mailboxes of both legal and illegal rent-stabilized tenants will be on the agenda; so will rent protection for market-rate tenants, roof improvements, and development concerns for the Con Edison site along First Avenue, according to a release issued today. read more »

Friday: Kalikow Gets Lucky, Jim Carrey Gets Unlucky, LuluLemon Gets Annoying

LuluLemon Attacks!
- Governor-to-be Spitzer has made it clear that he doesn't want Peter Kalikow around at the helm of the MTA--even though Georgie Pataki has reappointed him for six years. But an oh-so-awkward stalemate has been avoided, because the heroic Real Estate Board of New York has asked Mr. Kalikow to become the group's chairman. If politics won't have you, REBNY's arms are always open wide. (New York Times)
- If you live in the United States, you've probably never heard the name of yoga-friendly Canadian retailer LuluLemon Athletica. But if sometime over the next decade you happen to wander through Midtown, SoHo, Union Square (or two other neighborhoods yet to be disclosed), you'll certainly hear the name. Over and over again. (Crain's)
- That voluminous ripping you heard last night near Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village was the sound of $4,500,000,000 checks being torn out of mega-gigantic checkbooks. Will the winning bidder be Trump? No. Might MetLife sell the 110 buildings to its tenants if the price is right? Maybe. Maybe. (NY1)
- Jim Carrey has signed a one-year lease on a Lincoln Center penthouse, and it's a mere $45,000 a month! He got the four-bedroom place because he's supposed to be in town to shoot A Little Game Without Consequence. BUT: a day after that item was reported, Mr. Carrey and his co-star and director have abruptly abandoned the project, which tragically leaves the comedian an unwanted $540,000 rental. New York real estate is not a little game. (New York Magazine) - Max Abelson read more »

Thursday: City Booze Goes Down the Drain
- Okay, everyone, pronounce this with us: Biophilic design. It's the very latest trend in Upper West Side apartments, according to the trustworthy Times. Of course, it involves using "real or simulated natural elements" in the home to "promote well-being." What's the relation to green design? "It is a quirky, lesser-known cousin... concerned more with speaking to our emotions." And that'll cost you $50,000. (The New York Times)
- The New York Liquor Authority is making it even harder for you to drink your pains away with sweet joy-juice: There's a moratorium ("effective immediately"!) that prevents a bar from opening on a block with three there already. Actually, that doesn't sound so bad. Nevertheless: "We are flabbergasted," screams the NY Nightlife Authority. (Crain's)
- Today's Post real estate cover-story warns that folks building a house should "EXPECT SOME BATTLES WITH CONTRACTORS AND NEIGHBORS." We're glad to know. But much bigger news is that The Catskills are featured above the Hamptons in the homebuilding run-down, which surely means a Catskills cover-story is around the corner. Also: Corcoran's Joanne and Jonathan Douglas are the best couple in the state. (NY Post)
- Wouldn't it be nice if the working class tenants of Stuy Town and Peter Cooper Village could avoid a horrifying $5 billion takeover by putting together a homegrown buy-out? Mr. Jonathan Miller says: "I've never heard of one of this magnitude." But, speaking of magnitude, Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Senator Schumer are all for it.
