At Big Time 100 Bash, Rupert Murdoch Plays it Cool

Rupert Murdoch was standing in a deep corner of the Rose Hall at about 7:30 p.m. last night to toast his fellow influencers: It was the Time 100 celebration, an event that drums up publicity for the magazine's decreasingly influential list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

The day before, Mr. Murdoch had promised investors and reporters listening in on a News Corp. investors' call that he'd prevail in his purchase of Newsday over rival bidders Mort Zuckerman and the Dolans.  read more »

Dear David Plouffe: Please Make Obama More Like Mariah

On Monday, April 14, Mariah Carey—“incredibly well-funded, corporately polished,” according to the bitter pop music critic of the Chicago Sun-Times—was on Oprah, stumping for votes.

“Now Mariah didn’t get her new body just by eating artichokes,” said Oprah.

Cut to the video, Mariah at the pool in a black bodysuit.

“I’m a female and I like the arms to be slender and toned!” said Mariah.

Mariah got the whole first 42 minutes of the show, and also, her new CD came out the next day!

Midway through her appearance, a mass e-mail was sent from David Plouffe, Barack Obama’s campaign manager: “You’ve probably heard about the latest dust-up in the Democratic race,” it opened.  read more »

The Week in Music: Mariah Carey, Phantom Planet, M83, the Plastic Constellations, American Princes

There’s no stopping Mariah Carey. Her single, “Touch My Body,” off her 11th studio album E=MC2, and its video have so many cringe-worthy moments—no one above the age of 18 should sing about youTube—that it's remarkable anyone can take this song seriously, let alone have it break the tie between her and Elvis for most chart-topping hits. (This is number 18 for Ms. Carey.) But Ms. Carey appears to have learned a couple of things during her meteoric rise to the top (she is only 38, by the way). Despite the song’s lurid come-on, Ms. Carey makes the smart choice of not taking herself too seriously—she has always been the most playful of the Madonna, Janet, Whitney, Celine set. Jack McBrayer (30 Rock) does the heavy comedic lifting on the video. For her part, Ms. Carey appears in various phases of undress, shaking her assets (which would be the envy of any Equinox spinning class) and enjoying a laugh at the expense of Mr. McBrayer—and quite plausibly, her critics, too.  read more »

Madge and Mariah Switch Beds

The ménage is over.

The ménage is over.

On Friday night at the Ritz, that trumped-up gay bar up in Hells Kitchen, something entirely too ordinary happened once too often: Madonna’s “Get Together” came on.

That’s the one that goes: “Can we get together? / I really, I really want to be with you.” (OMG, LOL, she’s so like deep.)

The gays pretty much always freak when something from her 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor gets played. It has hit its expiration date hard. They like it—but at this point, it’s as inflected with nostalgia as “Borderline” or “La Isla Bonita.” And on Friday night, according to two attendees, a distinct expression of “meh” accompanied the ritual playing of the Madge.  read more »

Inside Mariah Carey's Tribeca Home

mariah_at_home1.jpg
Today, the new issue of InStyle Home hits newstands, and provides in depth coverage of Mariah Carey's triplex penthouse. Having over 12,000 square feet, the best-selling singer has filled the Tribeca spread with many possessions.

"Lindsay Lohan, Sean Lennon and I had a jam session in there the other night, they were obsessed with my Hello Kitty bathroom."
After unsuccessfully trying to get into a Central Park West co-op, Ms. Carey designed her own unique living space downtown. Here's how The Observer reported the deal in 1999.
But the diva abandoned her uptown options for a make-your-own penthouse triplex at Franklin Tower, a 17-story condo redevelopment near Church Street that started life in 1931 as the Corn Exchange Bank. According to real estate sources, Ms. Carey entered into a contract for the building's $5.5 million penthouse in late June. The deal -- which won't be finalized until the completion of construction -- is for a 5,000-square-foot full-floor unit, with an additional 600 feet of duplex space above. By late 1999, when work on the building is slated to be finished, the penthouse will include four bedrooms, 4.5 baths and, of course, a Sub-Zero refrigerator. Ms. Carey is also in contract for $3.5 million on the full-floor unit below the penthouse, sources said -- bringing her total expenditure to $9 million.

Keanu, Mariah and Frankie - Oh My!

Keanu Reeves' house looks like a mausoleum; Mariah Carey wears halter-tops to funerals.

These things and more we learned, assuming the brokers aren't goosing the truth a bit, in tomorrow's Real Estate section of The New York Times.

In a rather breezy, loping piece by Teri Karush Rogers (I know, we should talk), brokers serve up their usual self-serving tidbits of non-information about celebrities, sprinkled with a few good little snippets--notably from Elliman's Dolly Lenz.

Dolly says:

[She] once advised Mariah Carey to arrive for an interview with a Manhattan building's co-op board "dressed for a funeral." She appeared "in a halter top and mini-mini-miniskirt," Ms. Lenz recalled.

"I said, 'I told you to come dressed for a funeral,' " Ms. Lenz said. "She said, 'This is the way I dress for a funeral.' " She was not approved.

Right! Remember that? From The Economist, Sept. 8, 2005:

A few years ago Ms Lenz sold Barbara Streisand's apartment on Central Park West to Mariah Carey, another popular singer, only to have the deal blocked by a residents' committee which balked at the team of bodyguards accompanying Ms Carey to her interview.
