About Last Night: Instant Nostalgia for Retro-Futurism Yields Another Moby Album
In 1992, Moby was among the bristling avant garde of dance music, at a time when that genre seemed poised to break through to the mainstream in a big way. It was with him that it did break, just a few years later. 1999’s Play, mainly a roster of scratchy blues and gospel samples layered over languid, housey tracks, sold nine million copies worldwide, spawned a series of hits, and introduced us to the ubiquity principle, whereby artists and their albums’ success can be measured by the fact that you hear them everywhere. He was Feist before Feist, “Young Folks” and “Crazy” all rolled into one, somehow pumping out of speakers at the Gap, the Duane Reade, your doctor’s office, your best friend’s cocktail party, and all those Silicon Alley startup parties. Every single track on Play was licensed for commercial use. The future was then.
Like the era of "irrational exuberance" that produced it, that album is likely to be the achievement for which Moby is best remembered, though he recently remarked that “in hindsight, it wasn't fun being the crucified poster child for selling out.” read more »
Manhattan Weekend Box Office: Who Looks Better in Fur by the Fireside? Boleyn Babes, Bana Best B-Balling Ferrell
In a turn of a events that will not help our fair city’s reputation as bookish and snobby, The Other Boleyn Girl (no. 1), based on the best-selling tome of the same name, handily beat out the Will Ferrell comedy Semi-Pro (no. 3), despite playing at two fewer theaters. Nationally, however, Boleyn’s buxom stars, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, and their shana punims were no match for the near-ubiquitous ad campaign for Semi-Pro, with Ferrell appearing in everything from Old Spice commercials to ESPN’s Sportscenter, counting down the top ten sports hair-dos. The comedy captured the top spot, while the drama ranked fourth behind Vantage Point (no. 2) and The Spiderwick Chronicles. read more »

Natalie Portman to Direct Love and Darkness in Hebrew
After getting all fiesty with Scarlett Johansson as a jealous mistress in The Other Boleyn Sister, Natalie Portman plans on getting involved in another Tale of Love and Darkness, only this time she'll be behind the camera. Ms. Portman plans to direct a film adaptation of Amos Oz's memoir about growing up in the 1940s and 50's in Jerusalem. She also plans to stay true to the book and shoot the film in Hebrew. Azoi? Really! Ms. Portman told W magazine: "I've been reading Oz since high school, and when I read his biography I just sort of saw it," she said.
More from The Jerusalem Post after the jump.
Natalie Portman's New Shoes to Kill Competition Only
Natalie Portman has found a stylish way to save the environment. The 26-year-old actress, whose diet has remained strictly meat-free for the last 17 years, has joined forces with New York-based fashion label Té Casan to design a line of “vegan-friendly” shoes called—what else?—the Natalie Portman Collection.
Actual designs for Ms. Portman’s forthcoming footwear have not yet been publicly released, according to E!. But the actress—who has a starring role in director Justin Chadwick’s forthcoming The Other Boleyn Girl—does sport one pair, red faux-patent-leather pumps, on the company’s Web site.
To be priced at about $200, the shoes are not only animal-free, but they’re charitable too—5% of the profits will go a good cause. They are expected to hit stores in February, but eager shoppers can reportedly nab a pair of Portman kicks from the Té Casan site as early as January, 15.
Natalie Portman Talks About Getting Naked
Natalie Portman is insecure at times, the 26-year-old actress said in an interview with MTV, where she also talks about the consequences of her poor professional choices. “I might think I won't be able to do something, but I'll do it anyway, because I've sort of known that failing isn't that bad. Especially with my job, no one gets hurt. If I mess up, it's like, ‘OK, somebody loses a little money,’ which I know is a big deal to some people, but no one dies,” offered the 26-year-old star of director Zach Helm’s fantasy feature, Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, which opens tomorrow. In the interview, Ms. Portman also talked about taking off her clothes for Wes Anderson’s short, Hotel Chevalier, referring to the fleshy episode as “really silly.” Though she purports to not “really have regrets,” she did say that she doesn’t “like the misappropriation of stuff, like when you create something as part of a story and then a piece of it ends up on a porn site.” In her next film, director Jim Sheridan’s drama Brothers, a remake of Susanne Bier’s 2004 Brødre, Ms. Portman will act alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire, who plays her husband in the flick.

Last weekend proved that the box office is still pretty sweet on kiddie films, as Bee Movie overtook American Gangster for the No. 1 spot. (Fred Claus came in third. Sigh.) read more »
Remains of the Day: Natalie Portman, Wes & Owen, Edward Albee
- Natalie Portman pretends she’s important and makes fantastically obvious picks for a charity CD. A Shins remix? No way!
- Nice guy/every-mid-20s-to-30s-something girl’s dreamboat Ron Livingston will break out of Office Space’s shadow and into more dramatic roles in his movies opening this weekend. Damn it feels good to be… Richard Pimentel?
- An interview with Owen Wilson conducted by his bud Wes Anderson will be posted on MySpace at midnight tonight. Synchronize your watches.
- Right afterward, you can see 80-year-old playwright Edward Albee discuss his new works on Channel 13 at 12:30 a.m. and get your culture fix for the weekend. Make sure you watch some dumb VH1 shows and drink a bottle of whiskey right afterward. Good night!
