At Monday night's relaunch of Dylan Lauren's uptown candy store Dylan's Candy Bar, director Woody Allen arrived with his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, and their two adopted daughters, Bechet and Manzie. He posed for photos with the whole family and Ms. Lauren. And judging from his faint half-smile, he looked as though he almost didn't mind. 

Mr. Allen rarely makes public appearance at New York society events unless they have to do with the release of one of his new films featuring Scarlett Johansson. Even more rarely does he bring his wife along with him to walk the red carpet. At Monday evening's party for the relaunch of Dylan Lauren's (daughter of Ralph) popular store, Dylan's Candy Bar, it was not surprising that sugar featured prominently in the celebration. Tables were piled with mini-brownies and cupcakes; there was a marshmallow dipping station and bikini-and-body-paint-clad candy necklace distributors. The candy-garnished cocktails were hit or miss, however. (Cosmopolitan-like drink with rock candy stirrer? Good. Barcardi with orange liqueur and a sunken piece of bubblegum? Less so).

The revamped store will feature clothing and accessories lines and a wider selection of fancier chocolate, Ms. Lauren told the Daily Transom. We wondered whether she thought people were more likely to turn to sweets in these troubled times, and she recalled that business during the store's original opening week—which fell during the week of September 11, 2001—was "rocking."  read more »

Guests at the Ralph Lauren show Friday morning on Hudson Street may have felt like they were in the steamroom of a very expensive Uptown spa: Soothing World music, the stacked intimacy of just a few rows of seating, Moroccan-looking lamp hanging from the entrance to the runway, cream-colored cushions on the benches. Or maybe it was just the heat.

LeBron James, who hosted a charity event at the Polo Mansion earlier this week, sat beside David Lauren in the front row, joined by sleek-looking girlfriend Savannah Brinson. Mr. James occasionally shared a laugh with the younger Mr. Lauren as the khaki-licious collection breezed down the runway on turbaned models. Yesterday, we issued some tardies to the designers who continue to struggle to begin their shows on time. (Even Diane von Furstenberg, the issuer of the original pleading letter asking designers to be punctual, got one!)

Since then we've learned that Carolina Herrera nearly lost her mind when Renee Zellweger showed up over 25 minutes late to her Monday morning show. And Monday's 1 p.m. Thakoon show was reportedly held up for 57 minutes due to Kanye West’s late arrival.   read more »

Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis have both reportedly paid a visit to the doctor shortly after Sex and the City's release, opting for a breast augmentation surgery and a varicose vein removal, respectively. [P6]

Barack and Michelle Obama appear on the cover of Us Weekly this week with Mrs. Obama depicted as a "down-to-earth mom." Never mind the fact that she graduated cum laude from Princeton followed by Harvard Law. [Us Weekly]

Exes Anne Hathaway and Raffaello Follieri stayed at separate residences in New York yesterday—Ms. Hathaway at Gramercy Park Hotel and Mr. Follieri at his rental in Trump Tower—but were reportedly planning to meet up for dinner at Cipriani's.  read more »

In a small storefront on Broome Street, where Little Italy gives way to Chinatown, an old-fashioned candy maker called Papabubble has set up shop. On a recent sunny afternoon, two raffish young men, each wearing work gloves, their hair secured in matching black do-rags, stood behind a marble counter, kneading and pulling several gelatinous blobs. One was white and doughy-looking; another was yellow-brown and looked like a huge molasses spill. It was almost iridescent.  read more »
