Last night a friend and I were walking around SoHo and saw Delicatessen...Within five minutes of sitting at the bar, some young super-angry dude storms up to the bar and starts laying into the bartending staff screaming shit like, 'Fuck you!!! Fuck your restaurant!!! Fuck your hipstery little patrons who think they are so fucking cool!!! People fucking live on this block!!! I can hear these people screaming outside my fucking apartment all fucking night!!!' And all through his rant everyone, including the bartending staff, are just staring at this dude with big grins on their faces, clearly enjoying his rage. read more »

Manhattan's Powerfuls Begin to 'Nest' as Economy Crumbles

While some celebrity homeowners--Julian Schnabel for one--are hurrying to get rid of their lavish homes as the economy continues to dissolve, others are taking to the old tradition of "nesting," a term that gained currency post 9/11 when (as USA Today wrote in January 2002) people started "spending more time at home" and "feathering [their] nests with more elaborate and entertaining diversions." (Does that mean we can finally get a Wii?)

Indeed, high-profile New Yorkers have recently taken to remodeling their homes to make them more livable. Some have even taken to acquiring (additional?) weekend homes to get away from all the negative talk of the economy around the city. read more »

Who Will Be the Vultures of the New Economy?

We've already heard about rich people trying to hang onto their private jets in the face of global economic collapse. And we've heard how the chairman and CEO of Lehman Brothers, Richard Fuld Jr., is selling off his private art collection. Even the $50,000 tables at New York's fanciest benefits may be left empty come spring.

And so The Wall Street Journal has posed a reasonable question: Is Bling Over?

Francois Henri Pinault, the CEO of the PPR luxury group that owns Gucci, reportedly said a few weeks ago that the rich will always be rich. Still, Francesco Trapani, chief executive of the Bulgari Group, recently had to sell his 137-foot yacht. And Barry Sternlicht, the chairman and chief executive of Starwood Capital, told The Journal that he's "just waiting out the tsunami. That's what this is, a financial tsunami." read more »

Ryan Reynolds Risks 'Bleeding Nipples' For a Good Cause

Ryan Reynolds, the actor best known for his role as Scarlett Johansson's new husband, is running the New York Marathon this year! In an entry on Huffington Post this morning, he begins by recalling his previous experience as a spectator of the 38-year-old race:

I joined the crowd about a half-mile before the race's end at Tavern On The Green. With my arms resting on the cold cordon, I saw an incredible spectacle of people pushed to the very brink of collapse. I expected exhaustion, but what I didn't expect was to see just how much these runners had to EARN their prize.

The 'Scold' Item: Please No Partying, It's a Recession!

On Saturday night, Celerie Kemble celebrated her birthday! So what's wrong with that?

"LIFE doesn't stop just because the economy is cratering," the write-up begins. The item describes the stripping down to the waist of Bronson van Wyck onstage.
Watch Out! Charlize Theron Ordered to Pay for Wearing Dior Instead of Raymond Weil

Fancy watch hoarder Charlize Theron will have to pay luxury watchmaker Raymond Weil for violating a $3 million endorsement deal with the designer by wearing a Dior watch in public, a Manhattan judge has ruled, according to the New York Post.

Last week, Daily Transom stumbled on the court documents on The Smoking Gun that indicated this wasn't the first time the actress has used her popularity in the press to expand her jewelry collection.

From the court filings:

She also was paid $200,000 by Chopard to wear its jewels to the 2006 Oscars and received another $50,000 from the Swiss firm for wearing its gems to that year's BAFTA awards in London.
